Historical Traveller Reviews of Lancelot Hotel

from gingging65
My husband and I recently returned from our honeymoon which included 3 nights in Rome. When planning our trip, we conducted an exhaustive (and exhausting) search for the perfect hotel, and finally decided on the Lancelot. We could not have been more pleased with our choice! The hotel is lovely throughout. Our room was large by European standards, clean, nicely decorated and with a good-sized modern bath. The hotel is on a quiet street, so the outside noises were not unplesant. However we heard no noise at all from outside when the windows were closed, and never any noise from within the hotel. The Lancelot is full of lovely details, including hallway doors on each floor that I understand were installed recently to meet fire codes, but are hand-made works of art created by the talented Ferris (more about him later) and I believe his handy brother-in-law. (Sorry if I got the story wrong guys!) We enjoyed the smoothest double esspressos we've ever had in the bar. Breakfasts included good breads and pastries, a bounty of spreads, cereals, juices, coffee... and the dinners were to die for. Ferris, we learned is not only part of the owning family and a charming host, but the chef! Sign up for dinner ahead of time, and you will be treated to a world-class multi-course dinner. We also found the location to be perfect -- near the Colloseum and Roman Forum, but really fairly near everything as we found Rome to be very walkable. Most of all though, the staff was so warm and helpful -- and multi-lingual which was nice.
All in all a great experience, and we will definitely stay at the Lancelot again for any future trips to Rome.

Wonderful Hotel

from Marl D
I have just spent two nights at the Hotel Lancelot. This was my third visit, and since my last the hotel has been almost totally refurbished.
It was a delight to stay there again. It is very handy to the Colliseum and to many local restaurants. My room was beautifully furnished with a lovely bathroom. I do agree with one reviewer who said you could hear the adjoining shower running! The round tables are a great idea for meeting new friends, and the breakfast is excellent. I would certainly stay at the Lancelot again.

If you want a good night's sleep, don't stay here! You can hear everything--toilets being flushed, conversations in other rooms, baths being drawn. When I first started researching hotels in Rome, the Lancelot came in at #12. There's a reason why it dropped to #27. I chose it based on the glowing reviews found here and in some guidebooks. The room itself isn't too bad, it was smaller than our rooms at other hotels in Italy but it was clean and the bathroom was OK. The staff is pleasant and helpful. Location OK, you can walk to Coloseum, Palantine, Forum and San Clemente and San Giovani churhes. If I go back to Rome, I would definitely stay elsewhere.

Great Place

We just returned from a stay in Rome at the Hotel Lancelot. What a charming and lovely hotel. We had a triple room with a balcony. It was large and beautifully furnished and had a beautiful marble bath. All the common rooms were lovely and the bar area a nice addition. My husband and I had a glass of wine there while our son was sleeping in the late afternoon. The breakfast room/ dining room is large and lovely. The round tables do lend themselves to sharing and meeting other guests which we liked. It is also immaculately clean. We found little neighborhood groceries and cafes nearby, as well as resturants.
One little bakery had wonderful pastries for .65 E. The area is not as upscale as the area near, for example, Piazza Santa Nuvano, but full of atmospher and quiet and safe. A five minute walk to metro and the Collloseum.

Really Good Deal

We stayed in Lancelot Hotel only for two nights, but will like to highly recommend this hotel for those who visit Rome. The room is spacious, clean and comfortable. The staff are all very, very friendly and helpful. We particularly enjoyed the dinner (the Half-Board offer is really a good deal). The hotel is also centrally located and it is very easy (with direction from the staff) to take public transport to Vatican, Spanish Steps etc. Within 10 min or so you can also visit Colosium, the Roman Forum and St Peter in Chains....will certainly stay in this hotel again if we come back to Rome. An advice: book in advance!

Good Location

from quasar33
Great location, nice common areas and helpful staff. The hotel was about 1/4 of a mile from the colisseum. Our room wasn't much to talk about, since it was on the ground level. Personally, I was expecting a little more for the price we paid. Recommended if you want to be close to the colisseum and/or want to stay in a quiet location in Rome.

What a let down

from FatFella
Just got back from 2 days in Rome (October 2003). During our stay we had 2 nights at the Lancelot. Given all the excellent reviews of this hotel we were really looking forward to staying there and what a disappointment. On the plus side all the staff were very friendly and the public areas were smart, if not to our taste. On the down side our room was small, grubby and very very tired looking. The bathroom was no bigger than a telephone box. This was made all the more galling due the fact that we had forked out for one of the more expensive terrace rooms. My advice would be to find somewhere a little more central and a lot cleaner to spend your 160 EUR a night on.

good choice

Stayed 3 nights September 2003. Safe, quiet location and well served by public transport. My advice is to use the bus, after two trips you'll feel like a native! I used the local restaurants, very good value and friendly service. Hotel staff very helpful re booking airport transfers and tracking down an address I needed. I'd use this hotel again.

Not what I was expecting.

After reading all the great reviews, I was expecting a really nice hotel, in a really good location. I was so dissapointed, the hotel is just plain UGLY and the rooms felt like sterile hospital cubicles. We could hear everything that happened in the adjacent rooms and the hallway, including constant loud slamming doors!!!! The hotels location is only good for visiting the Colloseum because there are no interesting shops, restaurants or anything really near by. We had to totally rely on walking or public transportation the entire week we stayed there. And dont be fooled into paying more for a room with a terrace, it is shared with others on the same floor. At 160 Euro's it was a big waste of money even for the ridiculously expensive Roman standards..

Awesome. A must stay if visiting Rome.

We ended our trip in Rome and could not have been more pleased with the Hotel Lancelot. The desk staff was outstanding and the hotel was very clean. It was decorated very tastefully and the rooms were understated, but wonderful. The room was the cleanest that we had seen, the air conditioning worked perfectly and the satellite TV was the best. The private balconies are nice and the breakfast was one of the best that we'd had in our entire stay.

It's about a five minute walk to the Colosseum and about another three minutes to the subway station. There are a number of small restaurants within a two minute walk from the hotel that are very good. We were able to get recommendations and reservations from the front desk.

If you're going to Rome and want a centrally located hotel for walking to all of the major tourist sites, you MUST stay at the Hotel Lancelot.

Top Local Tips for Rome

Taxi scams Make sure that you get in a metered taxi and get it at a taxi stand- do not take a taxi from someone inside the train station who asks if you need a taxi even if the taxi is numbered adn looks legit- scams abound

pickpockets keep your valuable belongings secure at all times - small cameras left on restaurant tables are prime targets for street beggars

The Colosseum If you have children with you and are European they are allowed in free but only if you have proof of where you come from (eg passport or driving licence).Your Colosseum entry also gets you entry to the Palatine (not far away, next to the Forum) and if bought after 1.30 lasts until 1.30 the next day!
