Top Local Tips for Rome
Tips for checking out Rome You can check out the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon on your own. Book English tours on-line in advance for the Colosseum, Palantine Hill/Roman Forum and the Vatican Museum. Buy a book at any kiosk which shows photos of the attractions and overlays of what it used to look like. To visit the Vatican City, go around 1 pm mid week. If you go earlier, you'll be stuck waiting in line for 2 hours. Always carry a bottle of water so that you can fill up at any fountain, the water is cool and terrific! Food was surprisingly cheap, just don't eat near any big attraction or you'll be paying the price. Don't rent a car unless you know the dimensions or your car really well and have no trouble driving like sardines cramped up on the road. The metro is very cheap. Taxi drivers will try to take you and your money for a ride.
Stay more in the city..public transportation is reasonable (not taxis) Try to find a room close to a metro. For $4 a day you can go from place to place and ride the metro as often as you need to. The metro pass also includes the bus line if you want to take the time to figure it out
Personal Safety Issue Would not recommend walking outside hotel at night without companions (personal safety issue) especially to the grocery store. It was not "pedestrian friendly" even to seasoned walkers as ourselves. Shuttle buses (free) and cabs (pricey) were plentiful, if you knew where you wanted to go. This was more of a residential area interspersed with a few businesses.

After extended complaints to management, I was moved to room 225. It was only slightly better. Looking at room 221 after I was moved, I found that they had just taken the toilet "sanitary" paper band out of the trash and put it back on the toilet and the room was ready for the next guest!
STAY AWAY!!!! WHAT A DUMP!!!!!!!!!!!
