Very efficient hotel

Very efficient hotel well placed for shopping and sightseeing. Excellent food, although the decor is rather dated. This hotel is more suited to businessmen rather than families. The minibar contained only one very small bottle of white wine but lots spirits which appeal to men more. We found the staff friendly and helpful.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Intercontinental De La Ville Roma Hotel

Friendly staff

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at De La Ville for three nights in April 2004.
Our room on the 5th floor was rather small but it had everything we expected there to be.
The breakfast was the highlight of each morning. Efficient and polite staff ensured we left the breakfast room with smiles on our faces.
When in Rome the next time we will most definitely choose De La Ville again.

Great All-Rounder!

from Expat_Ozi
We stayed 4 nights at this hotel and were overall pleased with it. From past reviews we know it's situated right at the top of the Spanish Steps and also next door to the Hassler. I was disappointed at check in though that they couldn't provide a room on the 6th or 7th floor (we had booked a deluxe room) as was recommended through past reviewers to contain fantastic views over the S/Steps or Rome itself. Apparently there aren't that many of these rooms available and I was informed that if I wanted a room on these floors I should have made a request at the time of booking and that they charge a fee to just request these floors! What?? What would happen if the request didn't come through at the time of check-in...would you be refunded this amount?? I didn't ask as I was peeved I didn't get one of these rooms! Was disappointed again upon entering the room that we were facing a courtyard which contained the hotel's restaurant down below and other peoples rooms all around us. There were 2 single beds and not a king or queen as requested. My husband went back down to have a chat about that and they said we should just push them together....ahhhhhhh, no thanks. He was then advised they could replace the 2 top mattresses with one large king size and that it would be done whilst we were out. So upon returning 4 hours later nothing was done - except housekeeping had provided a turn down service for both beds!! Off went my husband again and 10 mins later housekeeping turned up with some sheets. I asked if she was going to replace the mattress and she said yes. So we left and returned to the beds having been pushed together and made up with a large sheet......we gave up......
The other negative was the iron and ironing board....it took 3 phone calls each day to have it turn up and on the last day we were advised on the 3rd call that there were none available.....On one occasion when they did eventually turn up, the ironing board collapsed mid ironing. I think the irons also were recently discovered on an archeological dig and belong back in the ground!
But on a brighter note, concierge were fantastic - they recommended 2 out of 2 great restaurants for dinner and arranged a car for us back to the airport. We didn't eat at the hotel at all as we found the cost of breakfast too much for what you get and the choice of food waiting at the bottom of the S/Steps in the Snack Bars was too tempting - perfect for breakfast!
I loved the location - S/Steps, Via Condotti for brand name shops ie: Bvlgari and Gucci, and we walked to the Borghese Gardens, Piazza Del Popolo and Trevi Fountain from here.
It's not a typical 5 star hotel you'd expect from an Intercontinental but rooms are clean (if small) which is all you really need at the end of the day.

Anything but magical honeymoon

from LoveTravel
When checking in the attendent attempted to add fees onto our nightly rate. I explained it was our honeymoon and that the rate was confirmed (I had my confirmation number confirming the rate). Finally after much arguing the supervisor came over and agreed to honor the rate. We ended up with a tiny room facing a very loud street. While we waited at the desk another patron was there to complain that thier room was so small they couldn't open thier luggage. We will never stay there again Beware!

Beyond our expectations

from dpaull
My two teenage sons and I took our first vacation to Rome this past August. I booked the InterContinental upon seeing a special promo rate in our Sunday newspaper. The offer was for a reduced rate on a limited amount of rooms for a limited time, including breakfast. I reserved a deluxe room (larger than a standard room but typically accomodates just 2 people) with a roll away bed (complimentary). Overall, our promo rate with breakfast was 327 Euros per night vs. the normal rate of 454 Euros without breakfast. Although still pricey, I felt we were getting a great value, particularly when I considered breakfast alone could run over 30 Euros per person. And, being at the top of the Spanish Steps had tremendous value based on its location. Still, I was prepared upon arrival to be given an inferior room, perhaps accompanied with inferior service. Boy, was I wrong! Our room was delightful, the hotel was superb, and the service was nothing short of first class. Friendly, too! I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. It has everything you could possible want. You will love it. We hated to leave and will definitely return.

good value

great location right at the top of the spanish steps. very reasonably priced. bathrooms are nice. room is small but nice. overall a great value in the $200 - $250 range.

Beautiful View

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed here in June. We requested a room for 3 people. When we arrived we had a very nice room with what was suppose to be a sofa bed. However the bed had no where to fold out because the TV was in the way. When we told them our problem they said it was broken and they gave us an extra bed in our room which would have been fine except the air conditioning froze our child at night. After much arguing and threatening to move next door to the Hassler they took the sofa bed (which by the way wasn't broken we checked) out and put the extra bed in it's place. Other then that our stay was wonderful and the view from our balcony was breathtaking.

outstanding visit

Just spent 5 nights here, outstanding hotel!!!! very pleased, great staff. 35 euros was a bit steep for the full buffet breakfast though!!

Fabulous Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
Upon arrival in Roma and departure from Roma for a recent villa rental in Todi, I had 2 delightful nights at the Intercontinental. The location to the spanish steps is very convenient, and the neighborhood is just wonderful in general. The staff were great and I was upgraded each time-- the first to a deluxe room overlooking the steps with a terrace with two doors to it on the 6th floor and the 2nd to a suite on the 4th floor without a terrace. Incredibly, the rack rates were 750 and 1500 euros for each room, but I used frequent guest points to pay for each-- that's what's so awesome about Intercons-- they treat you the same whether with cash or with points-- not like some of the airlines! In any event, will definitely return in the spring when we're off to Italy again. Happy trails to all!

Great location

from jdthejd
We decided to stay here because we wanted to be near the Spanish Steps. The reviews at Trip Advisor told me it would be mediocre rooms but good location. I was confused over the "only 3 persons per room". I have a husband and three boys. This hotel allowed me one room @ 380 Euro with the second room @ 180 Euro. No other hotel would work a deal with families in this area of Rome during June 2004 so we booked it! I can't say anything GREAT about this hotel but it was high season and we enjoyed our location. My husband ordered a kahlua and cream at the bar and it was 14 Euros! We just laughed. The breakfast buffet was great though and it was included in the price.

Great Location, Wonderful Retreat

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Intercontinental De La Ville was a great place to relax after a hot summer day exploring Rome. The hotel rooms were spotless, nicely decorated and contained every convenience. The hotel offered pay per view movies in English, which was a hit with the kids. The staff was very polite, friendly and attentive. Even our 15 year old son had no problem asking the concierge for assistance. Breakfast on the terrace each morning was especially nice. It was relaxing because the courtyard terrace was sheltered from the noises of the streets. The most important aspect of the hotel was how convenient it was to most of the attractions of Rome. It was within walking distance of many of them. It was also close to many fine restaurants and shops.

Top Local Tips for Rome

Take a guided tour If you are short on time in Rome, take a guided tour. We took a guided tour of the Vatican Museums & St. Peter's Basilica. It was great to have some one to point out the inmportant stuff, so you don't miss the good stuff when every minute counts. We also took a tour of the Palatine Hill. It was really helpful to have someone to ask questions to.

terrace visit the sixth floor terrace of this hotel..marvellous view of Rome

Rome for the weekend Rome was heaving - the Spanish Steps were crawling with Europe's students, the Coliseum was full of middle-aged trippers from Munich and Manchester and as for throwing a coin into the Trevis Fountain, well just forget it - you'd never get near enough. Rome is a beautiful and fascinating city but try and get away from the tourist areas to really enjoy it. Trastavere is a great area for a night out and Tivoli is just a short train ride away.
