Lovely little hotel shame about the location

Having only referred to trip advisor after booking this break I was horrified to read about the location of this 4 star hotel. I tried in vain to change my booking but Airmiles said NO!!. I decided that I'd go and move to another hotel if necessary. The trip advisor reviews were spot on, a nice little hotel in the midst of one of the biggest congregations of undesirables I have ever seen. Every trip out was a chance to be mugged or set upon by a range of questionnable characters loitering just outside the hotel entrance. Gladly I wasn't mugged or attacked but going out after dark is not recommended, sad considering much of the sights look great at night too!!
This really is such a shame when the hoel is so well run and beautifully maintained. My room was poky but travelling alone and using Airmiles to buy probably bought me a cheap room, but it did the job.

Loved the hotel, great service, ok area

I stayed at the Ambra Palace for four nights in a business trip. I have to say that the service was wonderful. Despite not beign the greatest hotel in the city, for certain you will feel very pampered thanks to the perfect organization and displecense of the staff. As many posts before this one say, this is not the nicest area of Rome, but compared to other places I have been in South America and even United States, it is not that terrible.

Good hotel in wrong end of the street,located in a dirty ethnic area of city.

A good quality hotel situated at the wrong end of a long street. The hotel and it's ammenities were of a good clean standard with friendly staff.
Step outside and you will find you are in a very dirty street within a very multicultural area.This at times can make you feel intimidated due to the large numbers of males who congregate on the pavements,feeling of lack of safety at night time.

We were checking out hotels to book for a tour next year. We were looking at 4 star hotels. What a difference from one 4 star to another! We checked in the hotel, then left for the day. Upon returning about 9:30 pm we notice what appeared to be mold in the corners of our rooms. The staff insisted it was not mold, but from all indications it certainly looked like it to us. Where there was paint you could see where it had been repainted in the corners. The paper was black in the corners. They offered us other rooms, only to find the same thing. We did not stay there for fear of the mold. Just a warning to anyone thinking of booking there. On a side note it is not in the best part of Rome---wouldn't want single women on the street outside at night. Other 4 star hotels were so much better and in better locations.

Four Star Hotel, Two Star Neighborhood

My husband would always say that we were staying at a four star hotel in a two star neighborhood when asked about the hotel. The breakfast was great, the staff unbelievable helpful, the rooms were clean and functional. I can't say enough about the wonderful staff. Sunday night they directed us to a great medium priced restaurant, they helped us communicate with our Italian relatives, they provided directions to various sites, etc. The neighborhood was not dangerous it just wasn't very clean. I felt comfortable walking with my husband at night, I just wouldn't feel comfortable by myself. We did find some great neighborhood restaurants. Itis very convienent to the train station and we were able to take the metro or walk everywhere. The hotel arranged car service to and from the airport for us which was a lifesaver. As everyone else walked out of customs beginning the search for the train station, we walked out to the gentleman holding a card with our name on it. It was worth every penny (about the cost of a taxi). Go enjoy.

Lovely hotel

This hotel is lovely- the staff are so friendly and helpfull. The rooms are not that large but have a large bathroom with 2 sinks and whirlpool bath. The location was not really a problem as it is 2 mins from a metro station, but the taxi drivers did have a few problems finding it! Also the room was quiet noisy on a saturday morning due to a market- request a room at the back.

Great hotel - location is a mixed blessing

The hotel and guests rooms are very clean with all the modern services you would expect of a 4* hotel (can't always be said for Roman Hotels) The staff were top notch - polite, efficient and very helpful.

The location is great in that you are a five minute walk from the Termini Station with handy access to the metro for getting around town. The benefit is that when getting to /from the airport the Leonardo Express is easily the best (and happily one of the cheapest options). The Trevi Fountain / Spanish steps are a 30 minute walk away and the Colusseum is 20 minutes - easily manageable for most people.

At night unaccompanied females will probably not feel confident walking near the hotel on their own, however, this is just because the local immigrant population like to stand outside chatting - there is no real threat only your own prejudices to put up with. Rome is one of the safest cities in the world and as long as you take sensible precautions you will be fine.

Would I stay at this hotel again - YES.

Good hotel, very bad location

We stayed in Rome for 6 nights at the Ambra Palace in September 2004.

The hotel is exceptionally clean, well-maintained with generous room size. The housekeeping staff maintained the room immaculately. The front desk was very helpful and accomodating. Their breakfast was generous with large amounts of pastries, fruit, eggs, and a helpful wait staff.

The downside is the location. It is located quite far from the main part of Rome and is at least a 20 minute walk from almost all attractions. Taxis were about 8-15 Euro per trip from the main area of Rome. We felt very safe walking in the area during the day, however, did not feel the same at night. The area at night has many people loitering around the street, parks, and train station. We did not feel safe at all walking in the area at night and took taxis to come home at night.

Overall, it is an excellent hotel in an extremely unsavory location.

A final note...DO NOT BOOK THROUGH PRICELINE!! They charged us more than the rack rate of the hotel.

Wonderful experience

We went to Rome with some worry caused by a few poor reviews about the hotel. It seems like those travellers had an exceptionally bad experience.
We were travelling with kids and had an excellent holiday at Rome. The hotel was ideally located close to the tour bus center and the staff was superb! Would recommend it to anyone!!!

Very decent hotel

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights in June, 2004 and we had a perfectly lovely stay. The room was very clean and good size for Europe. The staff was also very helpful and we even received 2 free drinks at the bar. The location is very strange, as there are a lot of immigrants in this area. However, we never felt unsafe in the neighborhood. It is very close to the Termini station, which is good if you're taking the train, but bad in that it is not close to any sights. You can take the subway (which is very dirty) or a cab (which is affordable) to the main part of town. Overall, we had a pleasant stay, especially because we got a great deal through Priceline. I'd stay there again if the price was right.

Getting around Rome Although the Metro is excellent value for money, if you are fit enough get yourself a good map with with a street index and find your way around the city by walking everywhere. You will discover more piazzas, fountains, churches and restaurants this way. Visit the Colliseum after 5pm, the queues are much smaller. For your visit to the Vatican & Sistine Chapel, get a guide to help you get the most out of it. I recommend www.minervatours.com

Colosseum Getting a guided tour was useful, look for people selling them near main entrance to Colosseum. Didn't have to queue for so long, and commentary was good and cost reasonable.
