Katie are the best!

I never write reviews but I had to in this case. Sergio and Katie from the Hotel Giardino were so wonderful to my friend and I that their kindness cannot go unmentioned. The location of the hotel CANNOT be beat, it is close enough to walk everywhere in the city but still a bit enough away so that it is not in a crazy loud area. We seemed to be about 15 minutes in different directions to all the big locations in Rome (Trevi Fountain, Colloseum, Campo de Fiori, Piazza Navona, Termini train station). The beds are comfortable and the shower was always hot and full of water pressure (an often difficult combination in Europe). Katie even lent us her Italian hairdryer so that we would have one during our stay and not have to worry about electrical converters. In addition, there is always somewhere there 24 hours a day which worked well for us as we were often out late. Another concern for us was safety, given that we were 2 single women in Rome, but the hotel was in a very safe location as it is off a main street and well lit. Finally, it was close to the train station which made it easy to get to after we took the Leonardo Express train from the airport and also easy when we took the train to Florence. If you are looking for a comfortable, economically sound choice in Rome, stay with Sergio & Katie!!!!

Anywhere else is a waste of money

Just got back from Rome today. Stayed at Giardino for 4 days, and found it to be all that past reviews have said it was. Save your money for the sights and food in Rome. Hotel Giardino offers the basics, and it does that very well.

Pros: Friendly, helpful staff. Clean bed and bathroom. Breakfast was more than satisfactory - cereal, croissant, roll, juice, coffee, assorted crackers (biscuits). Never lacked hot water. Location - if you don't wish to walk somewhere (such as the Vatican which was the only place I considered "too far") you can catch a bus right around the corner - the hotel staff can even sell you a 1 euro bus ticket! No street noise (our room was on the opposite side).

Cons: 2 very minor complaints - the rooms could use a coat of paint (there are many scuff marks on the walls). Also, while we didn't hear any street noise, our room was right down the hall from the front desk. We could hear everytime someone would buzz in from outside, the phone ringing, etc. This may only be bothersome if you retire early like we did (the streets of Rome wore us out!). It became much quieter as the night wore on and we didn't suffer any serious lack of sleep. Still, some kind of partition between the desk and the rooms would be nice.

Again, those complaints are minor. I found the hotel to be an excellent value and I would stay there again without hesitation.

Just perfect!!

My husband and I went to Rome last week and spent 3 days at this hotel, which we thought was just great!! Although the room was quite small, it was clean and had everything you could possibly need, including an ensuite bathroom and a TV.

Staff were friendly and helpful, you couldn’t hear any noise from the street or traffic since the room faced a courtyard, and having breakfast in bed was no problem.
The location of this hotel was just PERFECT!! It was walking distance everywhere. We didn’t use public transport once and were amazed how much you actually do get to see in just a few days and also how close everything was to the hotel.
The combination of the hotel and its location just made our trip amazing!

Tip: to get a cheaper rate at this hotel you will need the following book: ‘Rome’ by Rick Steves. I currently still have this book, which I would be happy to sell, since it was quite difficult to get hold of. If you are interested, please let me know!

Great Holiday at Giardino!

We recently stayed at the hotel with our two children. It is a small hotel in a great location. The rooms were clean with good windows that helped with the noise on the busy street below. Sergio and Kate were wonderful and very accomodating to us and our two children. If we return to Rome, we would definately stay here again.

A cozy bargain of a property in the heart of old Roam

In the heart of Rome's ancient wonders and romantic locales, the Hotel Giardino is a bargain. A small property run in a B and B style, the rooms are quite small but the welcome is huge.

The hotel has a very cozy feel to it. Breakfast is served overlooking a small interior courtyard. The setting is quite serene. Thirty steps down, though and you enter the hub bub of Rome and all it has to offer. This location cannot be surpassed.

Great hotel

Great hotel in fantastic and safe location, close to many of the major sights e.g. Forum, Colisseum, Trevi Fountain only a 10 minute walk. The hotel staff are extremely helpful and all speak excellent English - Kate the owner is English herself. The room I stayed in was small but with a good size bathroom and very clean. Hotel Giardino is a real gem and if I get the chance to return to Rome would definitely stay there again. If you're planning a trip to Rome and haven't booked your hotel yet, try this one and I'm sure you won't be disappointed!!

Clean but stuffy and tired

I have to say that I disagree with rick steves when he recommends this place. I think the location is great, the staff were adequate and the rooms were clean enough. Conversely, the rooms are quite small (which is expected in Europe)and the place was "tired"...it needs more lighting, a fresher smell and thicker bath towels.

The rooms were clean, don't get me wrong. But the shower molding near the bottom of the stalls was grimy (big pet peeve of mine). All in all, the value is there because the cost is low, but the place is just not "cheery". I think some lighting and new paint and new area rugs will spiff this place up. I think the staff smokes on the patio which passes into the main hall adding to the "tired" look and smell.

I think spending an extra $50 in Rome will certainly improve your stay. You do not spend alot of time in your hotel room as it is only a place to sleep, but it just wasn't what we expected. We were disappointed. Kudos to the staff though, who were cheery and helpful! An average place, at best from a very "low maintenance" traveler.

Great value for money

This is a budget hotel 2 * so do not expect any extras. However as my wife and I wanted a cheaper place to stay as Rome hotels are so expensive, we were pleasantly surprised at the cleanliness and helpfulness of the staff. The room is what you would expect but is very comfortable and the location is excellent right in the centre of Rome near all of the sites. All in all for the hotel price (for Rome) this is an excellent place to stay if you are not bothered about luxury. The food is also what you would expect a basic continental but the staff again are very friendly.

Had a fantastic stay at Hotel Giardino. Staff are all extremely friendly and helpful. The room was also great. My partner was slightly ill during our stay - but the staff at this hotel went beyond the normal level of service to help...thankyou very much

Charm and Location

What a gem. Great location - very near Trajan's market, and within 10 minutes of the Trevi, Forum, etc. The owners are incredibly friendly and helpful. When we arrived around 11 a.m., the owner offered us some much needed coffee after our transatlantic flight (even though breakfast service had ended). The rooms are small, but who is planning on spending most of their time in their room in Rome? Pleasant breakfast, and offers of help with any plans you have for the day. We'd stay here again in a heartbeat.

Top Local Tips for Rome

Roma Pass Get the Roma Pass. Worth every penny. It pays for itself in two museum visits - easy to do. And the use of public transportation is a must.

Rome Walks tours Did the Forum, Palatine, Colosseum tour with this group. There were only 8 of us in the tour group and Antonia was a fabulous guide (she's one of only a few experts in the world in ancient lavatories!). Definitely great value for the money here. Just make sure to wear comfortable shoes! (as with all Rome tours - lots of walking!)

shuttle to/from Rome's airport Booked a reservation with Roma Shuttle (www.romashuttle.com) for 2 of us to get from airport to center of Rome. Reasonable price, friendly driver, on-time pick-up the morning we left. Definitely worth the little extra expense when you arrive tired from your long flight and don't want to have to navigate the train and streets with luggage just to get to your hotel.
