Historical Traveller Reviews of Gambrinus Hotel
So so

The hotel is located a bit off the interesting spots, so you have to take the bus or accept a 20 min walk. While 20 min do not seem much - it can be a lot when you are exhausted from walking around. Upon our arriving we were told that they need to search for our reservation (we had a voucher from the travel agency). Finally, 10 min later they said they found it. No apologies or anything. Not a nice welcome! The room was VERY tiny but nicely decorated. It looked like a single room to us - the fact that there was only one set of bath towels and that we had to ask for an additional one confirmed this. Some equipment in the room did not work or was broken: internet keyboard, shower door. The bath room door was damaged - it seemed that someone hit it with a hammer.
Breakfast was ok but not terrific.
Small, delightful hotel

What a nice hotel!!! The Hotel Gambrinus was exactly as described, not more, not less. It is a small, delightful hotel in the heart of Rome with very good accomodations. Check-in was fine, but don’t arrive too early because your room won’t be ready until the afternoon. (but if you stay in the lobby and be friendly to the staff, sometimes sooner) The rooms were small, but comfortable. After all, who stays in their room while in Rome? Bathrooms were even smaller, but quite clean. The breakfast bar in the morning was fantastic. All the items were fresh and delicious, so make sure you arrive early to not miss out. Don’t say you read it here, but you can make some nice salami and cheese sandwiches to take with you for your day of sightseeing. Be sure to do this out of the eye of the hotel staff ? For your sightseeing pleasure, make sure you hop on a double-decker bus with open roof. They offered some of the best views of the city. My final thoughts, the most important part of your travels in Rome, make sure you share your experience with someone you love. Ushegha
Very poor customer relations

I have just returned from Rome. I booked a room in this hotel 5 weeks before travelling. On my arrival at Hotel Gambrinus I was promptly whisked off to another hotel a few streets away without as much as an explanation. Think twice before booking if you like to chose your own accommodation, you may end up in an alternative chosen by the hotel management.
Small and tucked away...

Comfortable and well decorated rooms. As other reviews have pointed out, they are on the small side. Not the most central of locations, but quiet at night. The Italian star system must be a little different to ours, as I’d rate this firmly in the 3 star bracket (the information card posted in the room had the three star box ticked – interesting!).
First impressions...hmm..

On arrival at the Gambrinus our first impression of the reception staff wasnt a good one.! They were very indifferent, as if we were interrupting them...and this happened on a couple of occasions..we had left our passports at reception...and when we stopped to collect them to put in the safe..they were practically thrown on the counter towards us.! The room was small but very clean and nicely decorated, right outside the lift though meant a little noisy on occasions. Breakfast was excellent...and kept us going all day. (but again encountered rude staff) Great restaurant directly opposite though. Overall...its the staff has let this hotel down.
No way

Very Bad Service. They Told Me They did not have the room I reserved 8 months ago. Then they stuck me in a room the size of a closet . We finally were moved into a normal room after 2 days and WE ARE STILL WAITING FOR OUR APOLOGY. I did not like this hotel!
Favorbly impressed

I just got back from Rome and stayed in the Gambrinus. I liked the hotel - the room was newly decorated and very clean. The bathroom was newly renovated and very clean, as well. The room was small, which is typical for a single room in Europe. I found the location to be convenient to the Termini rail station and I walked from the hotel to the Colosseum, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, etc. with no problem. The breakfast was very good, with eggs, ham, cheese, breads and cereals.
Value for money

We have just stayed at the Hotel Gambrinus and were most impressed with the hotel and staff although the room was on the small side and the drains smelt a bit. On the plus side for some reason myself and my husband managed to leave my mobile phone and his personel stereo in the bedside drawer. On returning home we phoned the hotel who have found the items in our room and are returning them to us. Would stay here again and would advise others to do so. Handy for metro, buses and the main train station (termini).
Really good hotel

Would definitley recommend the Hotel Gambrinus. Rooms nicely decorated and very clean, adequate breakfast and friendly, helpful staff. Within easy reach of bus routes and metro station. Had a very enjoyable stay.
Did not honor reservation price

Be careful reserving rooms for this hotel online. I had a confirmed reservation to stay here for three nights. I then received a cancellation of the reservation, claiming that the credit card information was incorrect. I reviewed my records which reflect that the correct information was entered. The, they raised their online rates from than the rate they quoted, confirming in my mind that the information I entered was correct.
Top Local Tips for Rome
pickpockets
we where on three seperate buses when people had there pocket/bags picked. be very careful when travelling, get one of those wallets on a chain and use it, keep bags done-up and in sight at all times. the locals respond better if you try to speak some basic italian, its fun. most young people speak english
Savings
The saiy Rome is very expensive. But everything there is for free! All landmarks, churches, museums, etc are free. Only places to pay is the coliseum and the Vatican museum. So walk the city and enjoy! if you go in a budget, by pizzas in the street shops, to take away. They are cheap and delicious. Restaurants will easily fool you.
Spirito di Vino
A restaurant absolutely NOT to be missed is the family-run Spirito di Vino. Rachel Ray fans will recognize it from her $40 a day TV series. Talking to the family is like a series of stand-up comedians, and the food is even better. I honestly had the best meal and wine of my life there. It's the kind of restaurant people fly around the world simply to dine at, and it's easy to see why. Beyond the history of being built under a synagogue near the Jewish ghetto, beyond the charming family quirks, is gourmet food like you've never had it.
