Historical Traveller Reviews of Franklin Hotel

Stayed there Jan 04. Rooms & hotel where VERY clean. Staff very friendly and obliging.
The location isn't as good as I thought but it fairly close to the Vatican. I would stay near the Spanish steps the next time.
It isn't as stylish as you would think from the website but is well designed. The music thing is a bit of a con as most of the rooms only have a crappy stereo.

All in all a Very good hotel with reliable and courteous service.

We loved the Franklin Hotel. If we could move there we would. The breakfast was wonderful. The staff was wonderful. The restaurant across the street (LA Piazetta) was wonderful. All in all a FABULOUS experience!!!! We have not stayed in a better hotel.

ll Get In Rome!

The last few reviews are completely misleading. Myself and 3 of my family members stayed at the Franklin hotel for 4 nights around the Easter Holiday. We were able to get a great last-minute deal on the Jazz rooms which are smaller and less expensive than the Blues rooms spoken of. We were pleasantly surprised with the spaciousness of our rooms, their cleanliness, and extras like chocolates on the pillows and free shower sandals. I believe those who stayed in the Blues room and gave less than perfect reviews are simply snobbish tourists who should have probably used that extra money they spent to stay in the Blues room to stay at a 5 star hotel where they could be pampered like they are probably accustomed to. The bathrooms are brand new as is the rest of the hotel. The rooms have all the ammenities you expect and have showers that are "to die for." We traveled to Florence and stayed at a 3-star hotel and quickly realized how good we had it at the Franklin Feel the Sound. For Breakfast you have selections of eggs prepared to your preference, sliced meats, fruits, cereals, pasteries, and a selection of fresh juices. The same staff that cleans the rooms also swithces off preparing breakfast, so you see the same friendly people so often they almost become family! Yes it is true the hotel is a little off the beaten path, but the walk to the subway and the vatican is very short. We liked the fact that the hotel is down a small street because Rome is very much a 24 hour city, and the street noise on a major street would have been quite disturbing. On a side note we originally only had reservations at the Franklin for 2 nights and 2 nights at the Star Hotel Michelangelo, because the advertised price during Easter was a bit high. We toured the Star Hotel and it was very clean and spacious and we would have stayed there if we hadn't had the Franklin experience. The Star Hotel was very close to the Vatican, but the Franklin is on the North Side of the Vatican and the Star Hotel is South, which seemed to be more of a commercial district. I say this because we visited the Star Hotel Michelangelo at night and the streets were deserted and felt unsafe. The North side is much more residential. We canceled our reservation at the Start Hotel, returned to the Franklin and negotiated a very reasonable price for the smallest Jazz rooms of the hotel. There is only one thing I was dissapointed about. The hotel's website has a picture of the lobby with a computer for public use. I assumed I could use the internet for free because I had to stay in contact with my job. I arrived to find no computer in the lobby, but internet available through the in-room televisions. However, when I got the bill for my internet use it was $36 USD for about 4 hours of use!. As long as using the internet isn't a priority for you when you are on vacation in Rome, I hope this extensive review shows just how much we loved the Franklin Feel the Sound Hotel!

Stayed for 4 nights in May. Rooms are clean and modern. Breakfast is good. Staff are very friendly. Stayed in the Blues Room ... mini bar was free. The Blues room is located beside the elevator and can be a little noisy. I would suggest another room if you have problems sleeping. The hotel is location is out of the way but did not provide any problems to us ... 5 - 10 minutes walk to Metro.

Very nice modern hotel, but...

Stayed for five days at the Franklin as part of our Honeymoon. Very clean modern hotel, staff really friendly, nothing too much trouble. Real 5* service from the staff. But, no real bar facility and a little way from most of the sights. The metro is about a 5-10 walk away which links you to everywhere you need to go.

We thought Breakfast was good, typical Continental really, in fact everything was well above what we expected, just it looses out on lack of room service and bar.

Would also recommend the restaraunt opposite as well, and the other places recommended by the Hotel

Would we go back, without hesitation.

basic hotel

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights in a Blues Room. It was very simply furnished and not cosy. The bathroom was a nice and clean. The Blues room cost 220 euros per night and included a complimentary mini bar which for some odd reason was located on the floor in the bathroom. The hotel has no facilities one would expect from a 4 star, no bar/restaurant and only a very small breakfast area. The breakfast was not great and the choice limited to boiled/scrammbled eggs, toast, cereal cold meat and pastries, nothing really to wake up to. The metro station was an easy walk and the restuarant across the road from the hotel was very good. The staff were excellent and helped us with all our questions. I wouldn't say that the Franklin was good value and if we returned to Rome we would stay somewhere more central.

Nice Hotel

Stayed 1 night last week. The hotel is nicely decorated especially the hotel lobby and breakfast area. The staffs are friendly. We had a POP room, quiet, room is small, but nicely decorated, the bathroom is clean and modern. overall the hotel is very modern as shown on their website. The neighborhood is so-so; a good 10-15 min walk from Metro and about 15-20 min walk to Vatican Museum.

Nice, Clean Hotel

from Jabei
I agree with most of the other reviews here. It was my first visit to Rome and I booked late. (The night before my trip, Hotels was by far the best price - even better than the hotel's own website). The room was very clean even though quite small and the breakfast was excellent. Like others I was just a little dissapointed by the location though I have no right to complain as it has been well noted on this site. We arrived on a very rainy Monday night and, not really knowing our bearings, the area was a little depressing. The next day, with the sun shining, and after a couple of trips on the subway, we decided that it was a very good location as long as the subway is your chosen mode of transport and you don't mind walking a bit.For information, taxi journey from the Hotel to Trevi Fountain was €10. It is interesting to note that the hotel is not known by taxi drivers (even the one sent by the hotel to pick us up). Again, if you like travelling by subway and bus, you can get back to Ciampino airport for €2.All in all, I do recommend this hotel but not if you like the extra trimmings that you usually get with 4* hotels. ( bar / room service). It is nice to have a very clean room to come back to after a long day walking around Rome

A little out of the way; very nice

from DMM64
The Franklin is a very nice hotel in a somewhat out of the way location. I agree with everyone who has praised the service and the breakfast. Our room was actually quite spacious compared to some other rooms we experienced during our trip, and the bathroom was large and modern. The patio was a very pleasant place to eat breakfast. The only negative was the location. It's an easy walk (10 min) to the Vatican, but it's a long walk to anywhere else in Rome. We did take the subway to the Colosseum, but the subway system is not extensive. For the price (I paid approx. E170/night), I thought it was a good value.

Excellent place to stay!

The Hotel Franklin was the best! It's a nice modern hotel, with wonderful features, like a CD player in each room (with music piped into the large bathroom), canopy beds, robes & slippers, fresh flowers, and I like the wood floors. Each night they put a chocolate on your bed (though not as sweet as we're used to) and a card with the next day's weather forecast. Breakfast is wonderful, with eggs (scrambled or fried), hams, cheeses, soft-boiled eggs, cereals, yogurts, fruit, pastries, etc. Stella is wonderful and such a hard worker. She and Gualtiero were especially friendly and helpful to us during our stay.
We highly recommend the Franklin. In fact, after our return from a side trip to Florence, we decided to stay at the Franklin again instead of the hotel we'd originally booked for our return visit.

Top Local Tips for Rome

A must try restauraunt You simply HAVE to go to De Augustos in the travestere? Simple food well cooked in an unremarkable restauraunt. Get there before it opens or you WILL have to Queue up even though there are plenty of restauraunts about and one opposite.they will all be empty while De Augustos will be heaving full. that says it all really. Menu is limited and availability depends what day of theweek it is but whatever you order it will be top quality holesome roman food and very reasonable prices. The wine list is Red or White and subsequantly poured from a tap abopve the beer fridge! and just 5 Euros a litre.

Enjoy a relaxing day around Villa Borghese Our favorite day in Rome was spent wandering around Villa Borghese. We went there to find the zoo for our daughter but, the whole place was incredibly enjoyable. The dog park near the zoo was very fun. It is a beautiful park and very restful (not easy to find in Rome). We also rowed on a picturesque pond, which was a treat.

Traveling with a baby Take a folding stroller if you plan on using the Metro - most of the stations do not have elevators, and some don't even have escalators, so you end up carrying the stroller up flights of stairs.
