With over 30 years of travel. The male staff members were rude and condesinding and I got sick to my stochache from the food! Room supplies were not replenished and the toilet stank and then wouldn't even work after servral attemps to repair it, when a repair finally DID come after sveral attempts to rquest help.
Quiet, but reasonably central

Bedrooms were fine - reasonable bathroom facilities.
Very nice restaurant, with friendly staff, and a good selection (buffet).

Good Hotel

from longrider
Stayed at the hotel in October 2004. The front desk was very nice. Internet is $7 per hour. Breakfast was good. Stayed in a room in the back and it was quiet. Bathroom was bigger than what we found in Florence or Venice. Hotel has real towels and 110v adapter. We walked everywhere or took a bus without a problem. We did not have any fears about theft and felt safe walking all the streets. I guess the key is to not look like a target. Booked hotel through hotels ($170e night). If you think you are going to have to change your schedule, it is easier to find your best price online and then call the hotel directly and book it. This gives you flexibility with the hotel to extend/decrease your stay without hotels policy. The trip from the airport and can done easily if you: follow the signs in the airport to the train terminal at the airport. Go to the counter where everyone else is buying ticket or to the yellow ticket machines (about $5e). You want a ticket to the Roma Termini. Once at the train station downtown, go outside the terminal where you see all the busses. To the right you will see a newspaper stand and they will sell you a bus ticket ($1e) good until it is validated on the bus. You want to take the #70 bus which is not where all the other buses are. The bus stop is to the left (when facing the train terminal from outside) on the main street. Stamp the ticket in the yellow machine when you get on the bus. Take the bus till it goes over the bridge on the river and get off at your first stop. The hotel is across the street.

Great Hotel

from Galaxy_travellers
Returned from Rome August 2004 and stayed at Hotel Dplomatic. A wonderful place. The staff could not have been more friendly and the accomodations were great. The rooms are on the small side but the moderness of the bathrooms make up for that.Enjoyed staying on the street side,( many rooms have small balconies), and liked the fact that there was a small grocery store less than a block away.
Will stay here again!

Rude, unfriendly staff

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed here in August of 2004 and this hotel was a horrible way to start off our vacation.

The staff was extremely rude and not at all helpful. I'm not sure if it was because were were on the younger side or because were carried backpacks, but it shouldn't have mattered as we were paying the same price as everyone else.

The rooms are tiny and you have to sleep on miniature twin beds.

Also, the location wasn't too great. It was a 15 min walk to the subway and any major tourist spot. You have to take an expensive shuttle or taxi there from the train station if you have luggage.

I would not recommend staying in this hotel.

decent hotel in Rome

from DisneyParis
Only problem with hotel was location--close to Vatican but very few restaurants near hotel--had to walk 15 minutes to Trevi fountain area to Find decent food
Hotel clean and staff wonderful
Good size room and bathroom
Had room on back side of hotel which was very quiet (had read other Reviews not to stay on noisy front side)
Breakfast was great and included meat and cheese and refills on coffee--Could eat in non smoking area inside or on patio which allowed smoking
Will never return to Rome in August but would stay here again if couldn't find similar type hotel nearer to restaurants
price at 70 euros a night was great bargain!!!

Great Hotel

This hotel is a great value. The rooms are clean and modern. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I stayed three nights in a triple room for 100 Euro per night! Close to Vatican and Spanish Steps (where you can get on the Metro). Breakfast included yogurt, cereal, fruit, pastries and café. I would stay here again.

I highly recommend this hotel. We got to Rome and the hotel we thought we had reserved would not uphold the reservation. We called Diplomatic and they not only got us a room - but said they would honor the price of the other hotel! The staff was extremely friendly, helpful and spoke perfect English. The rooms were spacious and lovely. The bathrooms and marble countertops and full sized hair dryers. And breakfast is served outside on the patio. It was very close to the Vatican and only a 10 minute walk to the Spanish Steps - from there you can catch the metro around the city. A great place to stay I would recomend it to anyone.

d stay at the Diplomatic again and again!

We stayed in the Diplomatic Hotel, Via Vittoria Colonna, 28 tel: 06-6833775, fax 06-6832685 on July 28th 2004. The welcome is super, the hotel friendly, staff helpful, rooms more than adequate, aircon, hairdryer in the beautiful marble bathroom. They don't replace the toiletries, but just ask if you need more! I had great difficulty in finding directions to it on the net, so made a note of things to pass on...from CIA: Go to the Ryanair bus/transport desk in the airport by a ticket for the coach (single about 9 euros, return 13.50 you don't have to have flown with Ryan air, but it is cheap if you book in advance I bought return flights for less than £50 each). You get the coach outside the airport and it takes about 45 mins to the main bus terminal/train station in Rome. Go and buy a ticket from one of the newspaper shops at the bus station for 1 euro each, then catch a number 70 0r 492 which will drop you outside the hotel! Once you go over the bridge of the River Tiber, (you will see the Castle d' Angelo on your right and pass a big white building!) get off at the next stop. This takes up to half an hour or so..depends on traffic! Do NOT catch a taxi it will cost you around 60 euros from the bus station. A family took a five min ride and paid 40 euros. Be aware if you have a large suitcase, you will have to buy a 1 euro ticket for it. When you get on the bus, validate your ticket in the machine. The open top bus, 13 euros, stops outside the hotel. Buy tickets on board, they run regularly, will take you around all of the sites and you can get on and off as many times as you like in the day. A great way to find your bearings. The breakfast is continental buffet, cereal, bread, yoghurts, fruit, cheese, ham and cappuccino to die for! A 1euro tip is normal. Tipping in Rome: No service charge, so leave 15%. Avoid eating in the Vatican area, rip off. You can walk to all the sites, really central, night life in the Navona square is great. Ask the hotel for any help, there are great local places to eat down the side streets, and very reasonable too. A great hotel, a great area (didn't realise how good until we went around and saw how central we were, and how clean it was!) The hotel will arrange for you to be taken to the airport for about 40 euros, this is very good. Especially if you are worn out and just want to get there! The return bus to the bus station, again catch from right outside hotel, can take about an hour, so bare that in mind. Catch the coach to CIA from outside the Royal Santina Hotel, where it dropped you (you can also buy the coach tickets in the reception there). Bag, men are everywhere, do not buy a bag for more than 15 euros, they will ask for a lot more. I hope you have a great stay..we did. By the way, we were at the front of the hotel, with balcony (3rd floor only) and there was no noise whatsoever when the balcony doors are shut. Remember...there is aircon! I can't wait to go back and will stay at the Diplomatic, that is for sure!

Good choice!

My fiancee and I stayed here in June 2004. I was skeptical to go by the reviews on tripadvisor...but there were accurate! We were very pleased with the hotel--staff were VERY nice and spoke English....location was FANTASTIC. We could walk within 10 minutes to a great shopping area and it was maybe a 15-20 minute walk to the Spanish Steps. Only 10 minutes to Via Condotti! Room was VERY tiny but was fine and clean--reminded us of a NYC hotel room. Breakfast was quite nice and overall we were very happy. Feel free to email if you have further questions. ***Hotel is part of a chain (AC Diplomatic). We had stayed in the AC Diplomatic in Barcelona and decided to give this one a try. Very different...but we would recommend this hotel to anyone.

The Perfect Place to Stay in Rome

from A TripAdvisor Member
My boyfriend and I searched endlessly for a moderately priced hotel within easy walking distance of the Vatican in Rome. The Diplomatic Hotel was very clean with adequate space and newly renovated gorgeous bathrooms. The staff was extremely courteous and helpful. The breakfast provided in the morning was delicious and provided a good start to long days of walking and sightseeing. I would recommend this hotel to anyone planning a visit to Rome.

My husband and I have lived many places and are careful about locations. We loved the location of this hotel. It was an easy walk to everything! It was very clean and we asked for and received a quiet room in the back. The room by European standards was large and the bathroom all marble. It was an excellent price given the location and cleanliness and quiet of the hotel. The staff was fabulous. We would stay there again for sure. This was so nice we just got back yesterday and I am writing this well deserved excellent review today!

Top Local Tips for Rome

Taxi Get taxi from airport all metered so you will not be ripped off

Colosseum Fantastic from the outside, but if you don't pay for the tour inside, you won't really know its history

Coffee and Beer If you go to a coffee house or Bar in Rome you'll find that if you stand at the bar and drink you will pay considerably less than if you sit down. eg and Espresso cost 2.4 Euro whilst to stand and drink it in the same place was 80cents. The difference in beer price wasn't so great but it was still considerable.
