Hotel des Artistes

from A TripAdvisor Member
Heed the advice "Don't bookhere". The previous review is correctthis wasn't a hotel it was hostel. The company rents out certain roomsin the hotel as apartments; while the others are forpeople that are tourists.
The rooms aresmall and are based on the communal suites concept. So in our case we had one entrance toour room and once you enter the hallwaythere are three different doors for the residents.Btw, you have to be buzzed intoto your room and once you entermake sure you wave at the survellincecamera which are all over the hotel/apartmentThe money you will save here is notworth it. This hotel definetely put a damperon our otherwise great vacation.

Why are people rating it so well?

from Braindrain
I stayed here for 4 nights at 79 Euros a night. It's a very short walk from the Termini station so it's convenient. Also, a metro station is just one block away so it's great for getting around the city. The exterior looked quite ornery so I was prepared for the worst. To be clear, I booked the hotel portion and not the hostel.

The first night I was there, they were totally out of the room I booked so they gave me a room for 4 people. Great! Or so I thought. Walking through the corridor, there is a gaping hole in the wall covered with cardboard. (This is the same for the 3rd floor as well.) I got it on the 4th floor. FYI, there are 2 rooms on the 4th floor that can hold 4 people, #414 and #415. I don't recommend either of these. The hotel's common room is just under both of these floors and the PAPER THIN ceiling is horrible. I could hear the scraping of chairs on the floor until 12:30 am!! (Which is when their free internet shuts down.) To top it off, the PAPER THIN walls are horrible. I could hear everything from the room next to me. That's including their "talking" while in bed.

Ok, next day they move me to my booked room on the 3rd floor. Great! No more noise! Or so I thought. The common room is no longer next to me but I was in the middle of three rooms. Did I mention PAPER THIN walls?
Well, I strongly suggest for anyone not to get a middle room. I had to knock on the door of the room next to me around midnight to ask them to turn down their TV. For the other room next to me, they were psychos.
They would inevitably start screaming at each other at night so I'd have to thump the walls to get them to shut up. (They were screaming in Italian and I don't know what "shut up" is in Italian. That's not covered in my translation book.) The condensation in my room was so bad that it was dripping from the windows into a pool of water on the floor. In the bathroom, there were (what I hope to be) cigarette stains on the floor. Another poster mentioned it was 100% non-smoking. Well, that didn't stop the psycho couple next to me. They were smoking and the smoke came into my room through the bathroom ventilation. There is a fridge in the room and an in-room safe. Yes, there's also a elevator but so what? Looking in some other hotels around the area (and there are lots), all of them had elevators too.

Their breakfast had some glazed croissants, ham, cheese, boiled eggs, and fruit cocktail. The coffee was horrible and the juice was definitely powdered. I stayed here because it was the CHEAPEST.
However, I would definitely NOT STAY HERE AGAIN. It is a very low 3* hotel. Perhaps the hostel portion is good? I don't know. I don't stay in hostels. There are plenty of other hotels in this area which are much better. Some examples? Best Western Hotel Canada is right beside this and Hotel Piemonte is half a block away. Both are also 3* hotels.

Lastly, the restaurants around this area were all horrible but one.
Bistro Ristorante (which also has a half board with the hotel) was very good. If you ask hotel reception for a card, they'll give you a 10% discount card. If you go between 6:30 pm and 8:00 pm, there's a special for 9 euros that includes Lasagna and a drink. However, do yourself a favour and try all the other menu items. It was so good we went there several times.

Clean - large rooms in a quiet neighbourhood

from misspippi
This was an excellent value hotel. Large clean rooms, beautifully decorated. Friendly staff and nice quiet location. Only negative comment is the slightly tired dining area - breakfast was not up to the same standard as the rooms. Also part of the hotel was more of a hostel so a bit of a mixed clientel. All said still excellent value for money - very comfortable and our room felt extremely luxuriuos and decadent..
perfect hotel for a weekend break.

No Smoking.....

from Seitch
Very nice hotel and only an eight-minute walk from Termini Station.
Some of the rooms are beautifully furnished and a real bargain during the low season (I paid 69 Euros for a very nice room).

My only 'concern', and one that I may have failed to note on their website (which is outstanding), or in communications with them is that the hotel is completely NON-SMOKING..... a real bummer for those of us who are still addicted and when the temperature outside is 2 degrees!

Great value at the Hotel Des Artistes

from NKSNewYork_NY
I recently stayed at the hotel des artistes in November 2003. The hotel for a 3 star is very nicely appointed. There is some extraneous noise, but then again the people next to us were having a conversation while one of them was in the shower. The elevator is a bit slow and you have to wait quite a long time, but once your checked in, no problems. I would certainly stay here again as it is a great hotel in its class.

Bargain + Clean + Friendly = Loved It

Loved this Hotel. Staff was friendly, room was bigger than expected and immaculate, seemed recently updated. The free internet is terrific.
Best bargain in Italy, we would definitely stay there again.

Hotel Des Artistes

This Hotel represents very good value for money. I paid 89 Euros per night. The rooms are clean and well maintained but a bit small. The hotel staff are helpful and friendly. The continental breakfast is ok.
The hotel is located on a quiet street near Termini and is good for the bus to Ciampani Airport. It is also located near a Metro station which is good. On the downside the hotel is too far to walk to real centre of town and there is nothing of any interest in the immediate area of the hotel.

Great Location

from A TripAdvisor Member
On a recent visit to Rome, we enjoyed the centrally-located DesArtistes Hotel, close to the main train station, and Metro stop to take you to any of the sites that Rome has to offer. The hotel has a gracious staff that was helpful in all services, from directions to guided tours to restaurant recomendations. The FREE internet was the best! And lovely rooms with rich dark furniture, the garden-like rooftop terrace, and lovely breakfast offerings all made for a most agreeable stay in Rome.
We highly recommend Hotel DesArtistes!

Good choice

from hcajones
Individual rooms are newly remodeled and unusually pleasant for this class of hotel. Public areas are fine but unremarkable. Staff is unusually pleasant and helpful, with exception of breakfast servers who seem mostly put out by having to do their jobs. (If the milk pitcher at breakfast becomes empty, it can be 10 - 15 minutes before it's refilled.) Reception area on top floor and tiny elevator that isn't always available are minor inconveniences. Location is an easy walk from the train station, and main city bus and subway termini are also at the train station. Hotel offers half board with two nearby restaurants. HB with Bistro restaurant is a great deal, even if just for one dinner.

A nice hotel

Close to train station. Lots of restaurants around. Room is nicely decorated. Friendly staff, nice breakfast, free internet service. Good follow up service. (They sent us a survey right after our stay)

Top Local Tips for Rome

The best melanzano parmiagiano... ....can be found in the restaurant in the corner of the square opposite the Pantheon - if you're outside the Pantheon look to the left hand corner of the square. You won't be disapointed - the food is tops.

Pickpockets Rome is no different to any large city in that pickpockets are rife on the metro and buses. Don't make their work easy. Ladies choose secure handbags with flaps and keep them towards your body; gentlemen put your wallet in a front or side trouser pocket where you can easily keep a hand on it.
