Top Local Tips for Rome

Getting Around Rome We had four people in our group. One person was my mother and while she still gets around fairly well for being 73, is not used to all the walking that Rome demands. While we walked between attractions fairly close together, if we were going from one area of Rome to another, say from the Roman Forum to the Spanish Steps, we always used taxi's. Cost ranged from 6 to 10 euros for the four of us and was definitely a time-saver as well as a foot-saver.

Check schedule of any open bus tours before you board. We took an open bus tour to the Catacombs, and only when we had paid and sat down (on wet seats, as it had rained and the staff had not attempted to dry them at all) did they mention that they were cutting the tour short (by about 4 stops) and not stopping at all the stops!!! The catacombs were well worth a visit, but we would totally recommend going by public bus (ran far more frequently anyway) and the tour was not worth it.

Vatican City Be sure to take a guided tour - a full day would be better than 1/2 if you have the time.
