Historical Traveller Reviews of Colonna Palace Hotel
Nice Hotel in a Unique Locale
We stayed here in August 2004 for just a few days. Pehaps the neatest thing about it is that it's located immediately across the piazza from the Italian Parliament building, which means there are no cars allowed in front and there are Italian police officers everywhere. It's probably the safest block in Rome. The room was nice (thanks to Francesco, who upon learning it was our honeymoon immediately moved into a front-view room), and the view across the piazza at the Parliament building was pleasant. Francesco gave us some great sightseeing and dining advice, and we found the location to be comfortably central. Breakfast was not fantastic, though the rooftop dining was a plus. No room safe, though, so we had to take our valuables with us everywhere. All in all, I'd go back, unless I could find a better deal elsewhere.
I stayed at this hotel in August 2003 and only just realised that I had forgotten to do a review! I booked it and was expecting great things but was not impressed. I found the staff to be average, the room to be average, the location was fine if you wanted all tourists but I didnt get a feel for Rome at all... I suppose I was expecting something a bit special. There is nothing special about this hotel and if you were looking for something upmarket then I would suggest you really upgrade and go first class if not then there are so many more hotels out there far more reasonably priced. I have just returned from Rome and this time stayed in a 3 star hotel in Trastevere -it was spectacular! The roof terrace there was a contemporary haven in the oldest part of Rome - now that blew me away! (San Francesco..)

If you are looking for a hotel with friendly staff, an excellent location and brilliant service in Rome - then this is the hotel for you. I cannot understand why it only rated 116 out of 807! The front desk staff in particular Pierro and Francesco were outstanding with their recommendations, attention to detail and customer service (which is refreshing having just visited Paris and Prague!). No problems with the beds. The home made croissants in the morning a treat and the panoramic view from the breakfast balcony - awesome. We will definitely be staying here again.
Great start to Italy trip..
Stayed in the Colonna Palace in early July '04. It has an excellent location (near the Pantheon) and the staff was very helpful and attentive. They have a safe behind the front desk for your valuables (previous poster thought they had an inside theft job of their room) but we felt secure locking our room with items "hidden" inside. Best part about this hotel, besides the location is the rooftop terrace! Great views of Rome and the included breakfast every morning was fantastic and served on the nice outdoor terrace. There is even a small pool (unheated hot tub in summer really) on the roof.
We were robbed by this hotel
We stayed at the Colonna Palace Hotel as part of a Qantas tour in August 2002 for 3 nights. There was no room safe. On our last night we went out for dinner for 2 hours, only to return to find our locked room had been opened (obviously an inside job) and our passports, rail tickets, hotel vouchers, companion credit cards and camera were all stolen from our (locked) suitcases. The hotel staff said if we called the police they would do nothing to help us. We called the police, and sure enough, the hotel did nothing to help us. It totally ruined the rest of our time in Italy, and we would never return to that den of thieves. Qantas should be ashamed for having it in their catalogue. Australians, be aware.
Great little hotel!

I spent 8 days and 7 nights at this really nice hotel. It was in walking distance to everything and basically walked to all the sights as well as the Vatican. The staff was more than courteous and spoke English very well as well as answered any and all questions that I may have had. Although I had a few unpleasant incidences within Rome for just being an American, the hotel staff was excellent in their treatment of me. I would definitely recommend this hotel and stay again when I return to Rome in less troubled times.
Great hotel, excellent location.
The location of this hotel is excellent and the quality is pretty good too. Everything is within easy walking distance - The Pantheon is just around the corner and the Trevi fountain is a few minutes stroll away.
Our room was fairly large, quiet, clean and comfortable and overlooked the Parliament building. My parents room was a bit small and dingy but we had a word with the receptionist who moved them to a better room with a minimum of fuss. One of the best features of this hotel is the roof terrace where breakfast is taken There are panoramic views of the city. It also has a jaccuzi, but we were there in March and, although the weather was very nice, it was probably not quite warm enough for this.

For those of you who are looking for information from people of similar cultures, etc., I should mention that I am an American who is currently living and working in France. I travel regularly throughout the US and Europe. The Colonna Palace was fantastic! I was given the recommendation from an American friend who spent part of his honeymoon in Rome. I was planning a weekend getaway for Valentine's Day where I planned to propose to my girlfriend. The staff was great and everyone there spoke english as well as spanish, french, and italian. I had several special requests for flowers, champagne, restaurant reservations, and other activities and the staff took care of everything so our weekend was flawless. The location of the hotel could not be better. It is centrally located in the old city center which allows a short stroll to all of the major sights. The area is also very safe at all times which was very important for us. The local restaurants and venues are also very good. The in-house bar is small and quaint. The rooftop terrace was fantastic and I chose this private place, overlooking the city, to pop the question on Saturday night. This terrace alone is worth the price of admission. The rooms are typical for european hotels and have a quality ambiance to them.During our next visit to Rome, I would not even consider staying at another hotel. I found a fantastic rate (?110) at www.**************************
Charming Colonna Palace
We visited this hotel for 5 nights in May. Since I am the BEST travel agent in the world, I did quite a bit of research before chosing the Colonna Palace. Eventhough it is not listed as a 4 star hotel, it was very charming. Our room had 2 french balconies that opened up to the cobblestoned street below. Perfect! The staff spoke english and were very accommodationg. We arrived on a morning flight and our room was ready to check-in. We even were able to eat breakfast up on the roof-top. The roof-top even has a small hot tub/pool with a pleasant view. We were able to walk to everything and being that I have arthritis (RA), walking far distances can be a challenge. We only took a cab to the Vatican. The hotel is located in the old part of Italy.
The restaurants and ice cream shops were open late. Since the hotel sits in the Italian Embassy courtyard, the location is completely safe.
I would recommend this hotel to any of my clients. Email me if you have any questions. Have fun, I did!
Loved the Colonna Palace!
Wonderful choice in Rome! I had read about the poor matresses, but did not experience any problems and we stayed in two rooms (arrived early and couldn't get a room with a bathtub at first). Our children were in two more rooms and had no complaints. Rooms were very clean and quite comfortable. The staff was superb! Very friendly, very knowledgeable, and always accomodating. Continental breakfast was the usual...not great, but not bad either. The location can't be beat and I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. Got a great rate through reservationitaly.
Top Local Tips for Rome
Taxis from the Ciampino Airport
The taxi fares are fixed until you pass through the city walls, then the meter starts. However the lack of hassle is worth the 46 euro cost. The hotel will arrange for a limousine to take you back to the airport for 49 euros. It is worth every euro
Not very good, alright if you like getting chucked around by a very basic flight simulator.
Transportation in Rome
Make sure you stamp your metro pass at the turnstiles when you enter the metro station. Security does a sporatic check and if your pass is not stamped, you could be fined 100 euro., double if you don't pay on the spot. Instead of using the metro, try taking a taxi. It only cost us 10 euro to go from the hotel to the train station. Upon departure from Rome, we booked a shuttle service which was advertised on Tritone Boulevard. It was much cheaper than taking private transportation. Allow yourself plenty of time to check in at the airport.
