Historical Traveller Reviews of Celio Hotel
Fantastic time
from A TripAdvisor Member
My stay at the the hotel Celio was wonderful, the hotel itself is beautiful with mosaics on the floor and a wonderful view on the colloseum from the top terrace. The staff were very friendly and helped us with all our queries. The hotel is in an ideal postion as it is only 100 yards from the colleseum. We had a fantastic time there and I would recommend this hotel to anyone.
Congratulations to Hotel Celio!

Rome - Celio Hotel - My Husband and I have just returned from a month-long trip to the south of France and Italy. We have not had very much experience searching for hotels on the internet and were concerned about what type of accommodation would be waiting for us when we arrived at our destination. Hotel Celio was excellent in every way. Situated 200 meters from the Colosseum in a neighbourhood with many good restaurants, this small hotel gave us exactly what we were looking for: elegance, quiet, good- sized room, delicious breakfast served in a marquis inside a walled courtyard, wonderful decor (mosaic floors everywhere, including the bathroom) and even a rooftop garden. Roberto, the manager, was very helpful with everything. When he saw that my husband was a very tall man, he immediately offered us a room with a king-size bed. The shower was a bit tiny, though. Indoor garage parking was arranged just around the corner and Roberto took my husband there himself. At 170 euros per night in the off-season (Feb) this hotel represents excellent value and we give it a top rating.
Another example of beauty in Rome!!

The Hotel Celio exceeded my expectations--the pictures on the website do not do it justice, just as photos of the ruins of the Colosseum don't truly show its former grandeur. Roberto greets you in the lobby which is so beautifully appointed, you almost don't need to tour the city! The tiled mosaic floors throughout the hotel and the rich fabrics on the walls, together with fifteen foot ceilings and bathrooms that are kept so clean you can eat off any surface in them all combine to make the Hotel Celio a wonderful Roman experience.
Our room was always a sight for tired eyes and it may have had the most comfortable bed on which I have ever slept--much needed after days of walking the city and feet & backs that were ready to give out.
The Hotel had a heated tent set up in the courtyard for the complimentary breakfasts (which were delicious and always served with a big smile) and even the tent was decorated beautifully! We never remembered to ask her name but our server was as gracious, cute and sweet as she could be. Roberto is a pleasure and will bend over backwards to help accomodate you with whatever you may need--I understand that the Hotel Celio is his baby and trust me, if you go there, you will see it's been done right. We've traveled to many different countries in Europe and stayed at all levels and sizes of Hotels--this one was clearly the best and worth every cent. No reason to stay anywhere else--even the location (in sight of the Colosseum) was fantastic and convenient.
Good hotel, great location

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Hotel Celio from 31st Jan to 4th Feb, and really enjoyed our stay. The hotel is in a great location, a minutes walk from the fabulous Colosseum and Forum, and about 30 minutes to the Spanish Steps.
The hotel itself was clean and beautifully decorated, the staff were helpful and friendly but to be honest we were out and about so much we didn't see much of the room! We stayed in a Superior Double, which had a jacuzzi - well a half-size bath tub which also contained the shower. The room was small for the price, but I think thats to be expected in a city such as Rome.
Rome is a fabulous place to visit, especially in low season. Although we spent quite a bit seeing all the sites (average entrance tickets 10-12 Euros each), the food was inexpensive and delicious. We would recommend Gusto and Recafe, which are near Via Dei Pontefici, off Via Del Corso (the main shopping street).
An Oasis Of Calm

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Celio in January 2005 for 4 nights and had a wonderfully relaxing time....which is somewhat of a suprise when you go on a city break. This hotel would probably best suit those who like a bit of peace and quiet when they return after a days sightseeing. In fact we managed to have an undisturbed afternoon siesta every day of our stay due to its quiet location albeit 200 metres from the Colliseum. If you want to venture into the Piazza Navona area for a bit of nightlife then a nice 20-30 mins walk will get you there or the taxi rank is nearby to the hotel and they are cheap. We found very good local restuarants exceptionally good value only minutes from the hotel. As for the Celio itself, apart from its location, we cannot speak highly enough. The hotel is spotless and the mosaics impressive throughout the building. Rooms are large enough and kept very clean. Staff were always very friendly.Breakfasts were held in a heated marquee in the courtyard...very different. The Celios web site is accurate and informative and contrary to a previous comment Roberto always replied immediately to my e-mails and faxes. Altogether a great stay and wonderful value for a city break.

The hotel had beautiful, individually decorated rooms and mosaic tiled floors. It is perfectly located a minute's walk from the Coliseum and 5 minutes from a metro station. There are a handful of local restaurants to try out, all serving traditional Italian food. Ask for a superior room with a jacuzzi when booking. The staff were very friendly - Grazie mille!!
Celio near the Colosseum

The Hotel Celio was a haven during our brief stay in Rome, a great base for sightseeing the Colosseum and Roman Forum area, and close to some superb restaurants in the same street as the Hotel. The owner and staff are helpful, flexible and wherever possible willing to provide the extras that mean all the difference to visitors. Wonderful decor and fantastic mosaic tiling make Hotel Celio a visual delight. While best suited to couples, the Hotel accomodated us with a small child. As we found throughout Italy, our 16month old child was indulged and treated beautifully at Hotel Celio.

We have just returned from winter stay at the Hotel Celio. The staff are very friendly and welcomed us after a bad journey from the airport. The room was warm and comfortable, and the street is quiet so that we slept well. It is easy to reach the rest of Rome from the Colosseo metro station and adjacent bus and tram-stops. There is a good restaurant further up the street on the same side; avoid the poor food and high prices at the tourist cafes facing the Colosseum. Generally speaking it is a pleasure to stay at a small hotel of character, as opposed to the large modern hotels which are indistinguishable one from another all over Europe.
So glad we found this hotel!

We have just returned from our trip to Rome a week ago and can highly recommend the Hotel Celio. We are currently planning our next trip for early next year! From the outside this is a fairly unassuming hotel accessed from a quiet street but once inside you will be amazed. The decor is beautiful with subtle lighting, mosaic floors and gorgeous soft furnishings. We stayed in the Pompeian Suite which is the hotel's newest addition and was perfect for my husband and I and our baby daughter. We were very comfortable with air conditioning, two jacuzzis, sitting area with tv and the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. Most importantly for a clean freak like me this hotel is spotless and beautifully cared for. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful, don't be afraid to ask for advice, restaurant reccommendations or directions. Children are made very welcome here. Finally, the hotel is in a perfect location, right next to the major sites (Colloseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill and just a 30 min walk from Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain etc) and with a metro close by for visits to the Vatican City but still peaceful and quiet on an evening.
Highly reccommended, go and enjoy this fabulous city in comfort!
Celio home comforts

The Celio is a comfortable, clean and interestingly decorated small hotel with friendly and helpful staff situated only a block away from the Colisseum. The rooms are compact but quiet in the busy city and is surrounded by small restaurants - some better than (and better value than) others. We chose to walk everywhere including to the Vatican City, the Trevi fountain and San Giovanni in Laterano but there is a metro stop within easy walking for those who are not so fit. We are only sorry that it was november and we did not get the chance to sample the roof garden - maybe we will return in the summer. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be recommending this hotel to our friends.
Top Local Tips for Rome
don't be tempted
try not to be tempted to eat in retsurants/bars overlooking the big attractions. Often you will find much better choices/prices if you step back a block (not too far into the unknown, obviously!) For example, one block down from the colleseum there are 2 or 3 really good retaurants, two with pavement dining, one mainly evenings.
No more wine, olive oil allowed through security check points.
Beginning in November 2006 you can no longer carry wine, olive oil, or any other liquid like product through the security checkpoints. They will confiscate and smash the items and then you can proceed to the terminal and buy all you want at the duty free shops and carry those items onto the plane. We just learned of the 'new' rule this past Monday, when we had 4 bottles of expensive wine taken from us.
Vatican,Colleseum etc guided tours
We have never been on one before but they are very informative and you do skip the queues when you take one.wort the money also.
