Read some of the other reviews and can't recognise this hotel from them. Staff and service were excellent in all respects. Rooms - now they would be very hard to beat. My only small point would be the pool is somewhat cool for my liking. Would go back tomorrow.

Great Room, Terrible Service...

Gorgeous room in an excellent setting....
However (and I believe you will see a theme if you carefully review other reviews), the service was terrible.
Where to begin?
First, we paid >$400 a night. We checked in @ 3 PM, took showers, and went out to see the town. Wet towels all over the place when we returned: Manager: Lack of turndown service--FOR >$400 A NIGHT--"An Oversight". That night we received an important message from a fellow traveler in Rome--totally incomprehensible. Manager: Agreed that only an English speaker should have taken the message. On arrival, we were asked about a tour through the Vatican Museums--we were told we "wouldn't have to wait if we went on a tour they recommended". THIS IS A SCAM!!! We waited 2 hours like everyone else... and didn't even seen the highlights of the museum! Don't think FOR A SECOND that this "luxury" hotel is above scamming its visitors... In their defense, one kind manager recognized that this was truly unacceptable, and credited us for the tour.... However, when I mentioned this to the concierge on leaving, I was told "I was the only person to ever complain" and clearly dismissed me as nuts... Does anyone think they've changed the tour company they use?
But it gets worse... The morning after our first night I noticed numerous itchy red bumps on my arms. Turns out, I had developed extensive bedbug bites (I believe our room was #449)--confirmed stateside by dermatology. No response from management... I guess >$1200 for three nights does not guarantee protection from arthropods.
On another note, I noted numerous charges for 6.5 euros on my bill (from my TV screen in our room). The concierge snidely pointed out that merely opening our refrigerator (which we did, to put in water we had bought) would trigger these unfortunate and confusing charges. Quite ridiculous.... beware or they'll get you.
On arriving home, I asked numerous times, for a central/corporate customer service representative to complain to via email—as I sensed that a local ”in your hotel only” complaint would not be addressed… As I write this, I have sent three e-mails to the manager... and he has not responded. Oh, and how about this...? We were told that a private car to the airport was 70 euros from the Exedra. We walked across the street and asked a concierge at another hotel the same question—at his hotel it was 50 euros. I asked the concierge, "Are we to pay 20 euros more for the same service just because we are staying at a “luxury hotel”? Per usual, he rolled his eyes and said my complaint was ridiculous.
I am sure anyone will agree that NO ONE should have encountered this broad array of issues for >$400/night! The Exedra calls itself a "luxury hotel" and, while the room was beautiful (except for the bedbugs), the service was sadly awful. Should management ever respond, I will publish their response.

We have spent several years trying to find a place in Rome that is consistent - we've tried recommended three stars and been frustrated by the size of the rooms and been to fours and fives which are nothing short of jokesThe Exedra is a very good hotel. The rooms are large, impeccably kept and our bathroom was superb. If you can pick up a last minute room on Expedia, you're laughing - fantastic value. The colours and decorations are a bit weeding cake - but what do you expect? - you're in in Italian hotel overlooking a beautiful fountain.Nearly all the staff were very welcoming, although one of the concierges (female) wasn't particularly interested if you weren't dressed how she felt you ought to be.ps the locals have not taken to either the bar or the restaurant in the hotel - hint hint.

My worst hotel experience ever - the spa that is advertised isn't opened, there were workmen working, very noisily, in the room next to us at 8.30 in the morning.

Despite having 6 members of staff in the foyer we were not allowed a drink from the bar at 1am as it had closed.

There is more but I'm sure you get the picture - to sum it up this hotels looks great but really has no substance to warrant a 5* rating.

Try a scottish 5* if you want real luxury and service.

I stayed at the Excedra in late December through early January 2004. I got a great rate on the internet and arrived to a beautiful luxury hotel. They provide first class service and make you feel like a celebrity. Our room included breakfest, which is served in a beautiful black and white "Felini-esque" room with bountiful food selections and the best coffee ever. Our room was a corner sweet with two balconies and it was the nicest room I have ever stayed in. The hotel was perfectly located at a metro stop. In the basement of the hotel is an incredible view of ancient roman ruins under a modern glass floor. I would not eat in the restaurant, which is run under seperate management. The food was so-so and the service was awful. If you want a no brainer luxury stay in Rome then stay at Excedra.

We stayed in this Hotel in May of 2003, its perfect, close to the train station, the Metro and the room the staff are just superb, I cant fault this Hotel.

We stayed at The Exedra 27th Dec - 31st Dec 2003. It's a great looking hotel in a good location. Its grand facade overlooks The Piazza Repubblica - which is basically an attractive fountain in the middle of a roundabout. There's a tube stop, Warners Cinema and McDonalds underneath the hotel. The main train station (Termini) is 10 minutes walk in one direction - walk the other way along a shopping street (Via Nazionale) for 20 minutes and you come to the Forum and Piazza Venezia.
The Spanish Steps are about 20/30 minutes walk in another direction from the Hotel. So most attractions are walkable if you don't mind walking but the hotel is not near the hubbub of the city. The hotel's decor is faultlessly luxurious. We had booked a Double Superior room through expedia which we found small and because the window had an inward-facing window which overlooked wheely-bins we asked for the prices of the rooms at the front of the building overlooking the Piazza. We were given a price and we accepted and moved to the better room a few hours later when it was ready. This room was flawless. When we checked out, however, we learned that the price we had been quoted was per night and not for the whole four nights as we thought we'd been told. They said it was our fault and asked how we expected such an upgrade for such a price and that all we could do was put our complaint in writing. We were disappointed the roof terrace and pool were out of bounds (although it was December). We didn't visit the restaurant but we did try the room service which was great but expensive of course. We found Rome expensive in general and enjoyed having a sumptuous room to call home for the few days we were there, especially because it rained every day. If you're happy to spend the money, The Exedra is the place to stay.

Winter is a magical time in Rome. I spent a week there, starting on New Year's Eve. My friends and I stayed at Hotel Exedra -- fantastic accommodations and service. It was impossible to get a reservation at any of the nightclubs that evening; so, my friend's and I walked around the city, and encountered several outdoor celebrations. There was a concert near the Quirinale, and champagne and fireworks mayhem at the Spanish Steps. The next day, we sought absolution for our sins at a mass in St. Peter's Basilica. And a one-day excursion to Florence is highly recommended, for the great art and designer outlet stores. The only unremarkable part of the trip was the food: it was surprisingly mundane.

We have just returned from a four night stay at the Exedra and it really is a lovely, lovely hotel. It was renovated a year ago and it has a wonderful combination of modern elegance with a relaxed atmosphere. We were upgraded to a Junior Suite overlooking the Piazza del Republica and were amazed at how much space we had. The bedroom was on the first floor, overlooking the living room, and the bathroom was large, clean and filled with marble. A full breakfast was included in the rate and is well worth taking. The staff were friendly and were always willing to help. We looked at other hotels during our walks around Rome but nothing compares to the facade and position of the Exedra.

Stayed here for a week before Christmas 2003. We booked a Double Deluxe and had a fantastic balcony with a view over the fountain in the Piazza. A very quiet hotel that is in a great location - we walked everywhere. I would certainly stay here again and again. Some nice touches that make it a luxury hotel, altough the rooftop infinity pool was closed it did not make much difference.

Top Local Tips for Rome

Taxi Fares Apparently taxi drivers, by law, should not charge you more than 30 Euro's to get from the airport to the city centre. This is displayed in a laminex in most reputable taxi's but not in others. Be aware!!

Best in Rome Want a really sensational meal in Rome? Then you must go to a restaurant called Il Pagliaccio - it is top class with great service and stunning wine list - and the staff have a good sense of humour, but it is the food that is pure magic.

Airport Taxi's Whatever you do don't get in a taxi at the airport when they are stood in the terminal building touting for business. They are overpriced and can be unlicenced. Walk straight past out the main doors where you will find a queue of nice taxis outside! They all now change a flat fee into various city limits. There should be a card in the cab itself.
