Great exrerience

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed 4 nights in the hotel Universo in Rome, from 16/06-20/06/2005. As i read some reviews about the hotel i was alittle affraid, but fortunately, everything was better than i have been expected. The location, first of all, is great;it's only 5 minutes walking distance from the central sattion of Rome, the Termini station(buses, metro, railway), has the national museum and it,s everything very close to you. The hotel itself is very good, comparing with all the other hotels in the area. It's redecorated recently-Christmas-, the room was big enough, in two floors, with a big bathroom, with all the necessary things inside. The staff was very helpful, everyone speak English, the breakfast is typical boufett(bread, croissants, jams, corn-flakes, cake, different types of coffe, scrabbled eggs, bacon, juices). The next time time i go to visit Rome this is the hotel that i am going to stay.

will never stay there again!

from Leo122
This is **NOT** a 4 star hotel.

Staff was very un-professional. We booked a king size bed room with AC but they gave us 2 twin beds and the AC was not working. When we asked for the king size bed (since we traveled with our son) they said that the hotel "doesn't have a room with king/queen size bed". When we asked about moving us to a different room they completely ignored us and they said that all rooms are the same (really?).

The room was tiny with 2 levels and stairs to climb into the bedroom (like a town house in the USA). Since the bed was upstairs and the AC not working it was impossible to sleep because of the heat (it was 27C degree outside!); opening the window was a bad idea since we could not sleep because of the street noise (this hotel is very close to the Termini railway station which is a very bad neighborhood; one night there was a street fight next to the hotel involving 5-6 people...).

When we asked about the AC not working they said it will work from 16:00-21:00 every night which was a lie; we intentionally stayed in the room during those hours to check if the AC starts but it didn't; we called the reception numerous times and we went down and talked to them face to face and they finally sent somebody to check; he came and agreed that the AC was not working and he said he will go downstairs to fix it; he was gone forever and they never got back to us with a story or for apologizing.

One night the whole lighting went off for the entire floor; our son was trying to sleep and when this happened he got so scared that he started shaking and crying; they eventually fix it in 15-20 minutes but this is unacceptable for a 4 star hotel. Again they never presented us any excuses or apologies.

The cleaning staff was coming into our room very much randomly many time per day sometimes even without knocking at the door (they came right after we checked in to do the beds...).

The lighting and water were not working without inserting the key card into a special slot next to the entry door (after you get in the room with the card it was actually on for 3-5 minutes and after that will turn off if we did not put the card). This was very inconvenient because sometimes when we were coming after a day in Rome to take a shower and we forgot about the card the water and lights were coming off in the middle of showering... so you will need to come out from the shower all wet in the dark, try to find your card and then try to insert it in the special slot... all in the dark.

Breakfast was ok but the worst among all the hotels we stayed in Italy.

I will write a letter to the Best Western Hotel management in the USA to point out all these problems hoping that something can be done to fix it.

Bottom line, save yourself from a big disappointment and rude staff and book someplace else. We will never stay there again!

Really Good Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
Our stay was on March 2005. Just 3 nights but we enjoy the hotel.
Nice location: 2 blocks from Termini, and from there you can access all touristic places really easy by metro or by bus! (4Euros full day).
The room was big enough (remember that is Rome!), absolutelly clean and modern!
Breakfast ok (it could be better, but good enough)
People friendly (they help us how to go to different places with a really good attitude!)

I would go back if I´m in Rome for sure!

Newly refurbished at great expense for awful quality

from freescot
They still put out dirty plates for breakfast. We tried three different rooms in our short stay - all well below standard. It's all here, photos included: http://bestwestern/ The manager refused to come to any of the rooms to see for himself how they smelled and fell apart. Fire precautions below legal norms. The manager said BestWestern had given this hotel one of its higest ratings in Italy in Jan 2005. What does that say about BestWestern quality control?

where was the quality?

from willowfr
black mould on bathroom wall. Breakfast dishes filthy. TV table crashing down. Bedside table breaking at a touch. TV remote out of order. Shower room door sticking half open, forcing it to close nearly did my back in. The plug of the kettle was held together by Scotch tape! Unseasonably cold weather and central heating not working, four calls to maintenance, too cold to get out of bed, finally given a different room. We went through three rooms, each as bad as the other. Manager refused to even look at the rooms. Breakfast 'juice' is high sugar squash. they say there are two restaurants, not true. Our first night, the one they have was closed. The fire hose on 6th floor had a big sign saying 'out of order' ... how scary is that? Staff are lovely, I feel sorry for them. If Best Western really gave this place it's highest quality award ( as the manager told us) we will avoid Best Western like the plague in future. It is in a good position though!

Comfortable recommending

from Lukehead
The reviews preceding all over the board - makes me wonder if we're talking about the same place. Location convenient for arrival by train but not as noisy as those immediately adjacent to the station.

Surprised at the room design/decor - very modern! effective AND interesting lighting. Much recessed so the room had a glow. Frosted glass doored closet was a little surreal but cool. Wonderful bathroom, super water pressure and plenty of hot water. Took some experimenting to firgure out how the faucets worked - so simple once we knew the trick.

Make sure you read the key instructions that are printed on the key folder. This is the highest tech key I've experienced - sort of like the palm print or iris scan being used in some businesses. We needed help (which was cheerfully given) the first time we tried to get in the room.

Included breakfast is adequate if not exciting. Mediocre coffee and juices. However, they did have hot scrambleed eggs and very tasy sausage.

Desk staff advised us of train strike scheduled for next day and offered to make airport taxi arrangements. A little pricey at 45 euro but it was one price for up to 4 people. They offered to find a couple to share with us and were successful so our cost was 11.25 per person, only 1.25 euro more that the train and much more convenient.

Doing Better

from Norajoyce
Yes, it is in a very congested area, but then ALL of Rome is congested.

I found the Universo quite convenient and, quite comfortable. Most of the renovations seem completed when I stayed late November '04. My room was very clean & modern. The bathroom is a sight to behold. SUPER MODERN. The shower reminded me of the "StarTrek Transporter Room" with multiple shower sprays! There is the added feature of a Bancmat (ATM) at the end the block. The desk staff in general were very pleasant and helpful, but this could be because I can speak some Italian. I find regardless of where I travel that a few courteous words in the native language opens doors.

They have a piano bar in the evenings which was very nice, but unfortunately, until Italy installs their no-smoking policy in bars, I was not able to enjoy it.

I have no hesitations recommending the Universo.

Turned out better than expected!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Universo is being updated so it was with some trepidation that we entered our allocated room ......... worse than expected ....... so asked for another room ..... no better. Both rooms looked out through broken windows onto disgusting air conditioning and were very outdated. No problem; porter showed us to a 3rd room which we grudgingly accepted. However, that evening I decided to ask the Hotel Manager to transfer us to a room which had been updated i.e. a modern 4-star quality room. Surprisingly he was most helpful (since we were now on Room 4) and by lunchtime the following day, we had been installed into our FOURTH ROOM. This room was very modern i.e. brand new, in a Japanese style - all leather, glass & chrome. Small but acceptable. Fabulous shower. However, no mini bar, no coffee making facilities and no safe so had to keep going to reception to get out jewellery out of a safe deposit box; most annoying.
Breakfast should basically be avoided at all costs and DO NOT DRINK THE COFFEE; it is just plain disgusting. On second morning I pointed out to the waiters that there were flies on the uncovered food; they had obviously heard that I was a trouble maker and more or less ignored me. Quite amusing really.
I found the staff to be polite and helpful although I'm sure they thought my daughter and I were completely mad and each time we passed reception they giggled amongst themselves.
Universo is in very convenient location for Termini but unfortunately like most hotels, remains open to guests whilst being updated. Has great potential but is not worthy of 4 stars.

Pleasant Surprise

from A TripAdvisor Member
Having read your reviews,I was very disappointed to be told on arrival in Rome that our tour operator had allocated us to the Universo. What a pleasant surprise,we had an immaculate room with a lovely modern bathroom.During our weeks stay we found the continental breakfast to be of a good standard and quite adequate. The public lounges were comfortable and fairly modern. The reception staff we found helpful and pleasant when dealing with any queries. The location was ideal, with bus links to most of Romes attractions, from the nearby Termini. The Universo was a very pleasant and welcome surprise.

Top Local Tips for Rome

sights Rome is a city where if you are fit . you could do all the sights within a few days. Didn't rate the night life as any good.

Queue If you want to visit the most popular attractions prepared to queue for a long time. Be savvy, be prepared don't go to any tourist attraction without reading about it first (on tripadviser). Rome is beautiful but it is not a place for the new or the naive.

Taxis are cheap and safe. We mostly took taxis instead of buses or subway. Taxis are relatively cheap. They are also safer than buses or subway. No ride was over 9 Euro.
