Value for money & friendly staff

My wife and I booked this holiday with Newmarket Holidays in conjunction with the Newcastle Evening Chronicle. Upgrading from the original 2** b&b hotels offered, to 3** with half board although it was still allocation of hotel on arrival. After checking out customer reviews of Lake Garda hotels in general on the internet, I was apprehensive but without cause. We were allocated to the Royal Hotel, which I would describe as similar to a small Holiday Inn. Located only a short walk from the lakeside, the hotel was clean and tidy, the staff were friendly and helpful. The meals were ok, food was well cooked and varied, most important to myself, no holiday stomach upsets. I have posted some photos of the hotel, a view from room 26 balcony. Both my wife and I enjoyed our first visit to Italy and the fantastic views of Lake Garda.

Stayed in the Royal for 14 nights. Rooms were clean as was the rest of the hotel. Food, although buffet style was ok, breakfast was typical of region, cold buffet and eggs. Staff were great. Pool area was rather uneven and there was a barrier around most of it. As others have said, they don't take credit cards but this is clearly explained in reception in the welcome pack and at the welcome meeting. 4 stars are really due to it having a lift. Overall, good hotel and you get what you pay for.

2 star hotel trading as 4 star

We were part of a coach trip and from the beginning it was if our presence was a nuisance. Our room was large and the bathroom clean but we couldn't have the window open because of the bar below (we were on 3rd floor) and floodlit football pitch 20 yards away. The food was well cooked but unimaginative and always in buffet form so we had to queue up like schoolchildren. We were told off the second night because we sat at the wrong table even though all the "allocated" tables were being used. We had no hot water on the afternoon/evening of the hottest day and the swimming pool was out of action. No apologies or explanation given. Never again.

Not a 4 star!

Although says it is 4 star, the Royal is not, being between 2 & 3. We stayed at the hotel for 6 days over Christmas, booked through Newmarket Holidays. The room we had was clean, and was serviced every day, but the general decor of it and the rest of the hotel was 'tired looking' needing a good overhaul. Fittings etc were really dated with scuff marks on the walls. The staff were quite helpful and did their best but it seems the owners have tried to save money wherever they could. The food was adequate if lacking in variety. Breakfast consisted of either corn flakes or muesli, several processed meats, cheese slices (although one day they ran out and supplied chesse triangles instead!!), hard boiled eggs, hard rolls, and bread that was dry. You could toast it if you were prepared to wait for the slow toaster. Fruit juice was very weak, and the coffee warm and stewed. I expected cappuccino but got only the above. Sometimes we were offered fresh fruit, but this was only limited. Quite often the left over desserts from the night before were offered. Evening meals were OK but lacked a little imagination. We expected a more Christmasy feel to the hotel but were rather let down as it was sadly lacking. One thing to note is that when you buy drinks you pay your bar bill at the end. HOWEVER! you cannot pay with a credit card, only cash accepted. This was not pointed out very well and caught a number of people out.

This hotel claims locally to be four-star, but actually it struggles to be two star. While the rooms are clean and cared for, the rest of this place leaves a lot to be desired. The food is pretty shocking, too, and if you like repetition, this is the place to be.

The hotel was very satisfactory, just a shame that the food was a bit to suit the masses, but I suppose that is what I should have expected, but would have liked some more real Italian and regional food. Shame the hotel would not take credit cards to settle bar bills at the end of our stay, this should have been made clear from the beginining ad some people had used up all their Euros. Showers in room very small

Lovely staff, pity about the single rooms and food

My recent stay at the Hotel Royal,Rive del Garda was very disappointing. Whilst the staff were great, my single room was a disgrace, I likened it to a shoebox, and to think that I paid a suppliment of £125 to the tour operator was an insult. (the Hotel doesn't charge anything like this). The food was also very disappointing, apart from some pasta, not an Italian meal in sight! Most of the food was frozen, you don't need a chef for this kind of food.
