Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Villa San Michele

Highlight of our trip

from A TripAdvisor Member
I must express my utter surprise in finding the two very bad reviews for Villa San Michele. My immediate thought was that they must've mistaken it for a different hotel, because the one my wife and I have spent two days in, was surely not the place and people they described.

It's hard to describe the beauty, romance and tranquility that this hotel offers. An absolute 'must' for honeymooners or couples!! Breathtaking views from virtually every square inch. It's within easy reach to the surrounding towns of Ravello,Amalfi and Positano, using buses and/or ferries, for very reasonable prices. It's a small hotel, but big enough to still maintain privacy. One can clearly see that the owners take big pride in maintaining this top quality villa/hotel. The staff were all friendly and helpful.

Nicola, the owner helped us with everything we wanted to know about the hotel and surrounding areas (and believe me we asked a lot of questions!) . The food was overall very good - breakfast , typically what you expect: brioche and coffee (forget about bacon and eggs they just dont do that in Italy) , dinner was superb to say the least with a different menu every night .

We will definitely return to this hotel !!

Closest thing to heaven

from nutsabouttravel
I have just returned from my second visit in 10 months to this wonderful inn. It is exceptionally beautiful, charming and romantic! You simply cannot pull yourself away from the stunning views from the rooms and the stairway that runs from the street level to the sea below. Others have not mentioned the wonderful sun deck and swimming area -- you can dive from the rocks into brilliant emerald green waters then dry off in the sun as you watch the boats pass by -- the ultimate remedy to the effects of stress.

Others have raved about the food (both simple and excellent) and I couldn't agree more. The rooms are very comfortable with extraordinary views and the complete absence of the usual clutter of informational materials found in other hotels creates the effect of a vacation home.

The inn is very ably run by Nicola and his family and everyone gets in on the act: his wife and cousin prepare the meals; his father makes your cappucino in the morning and tends to the utterly beautiful gardens which run the length of the cliffside; his brother in law (and now his elder son, Andrea) serve the meals; his sister tends to the rooms. They, together, make you feel like you are a guest in their home.

I am thrilled to have found this wonderful villa and expect to return time and again.

We loved this hotel!

from GWtraveler
The previous reviews of this hotel are quite accurate. The point about accessibility is valid but if you don't mind climbing the steps, the hotel is an excellent value..
Quiet, romantic setting, freindly and helpful staff make you feel very welcome.
We also enjoyed the half-board plan and the dinners to enjoy the evening views with no need to searching for another restuarant each night. High quality all around.
When we return to Amalfi, this is our hotel of choice..
Thanks to Nicola and family..

Beware: Bad Vibes

from Inluv
I sympathize with the reviewer from Dublin Ireland.

I also had a horrible experience, especially with the owner Nicola. It ruined the fun I had planned on having in Ravello. Ravello is sooo beautiful, and yet this hotel and my experience with the owner is a sore subject. This hotel is not in Ravello, it is in Castiglione, I believe.

When I first arrived, I immediately got bad vibes from the owner and the others working there. The reception area was not very clean, it was dark inside, and it did not feel like a happy bright place to be in. The owner is very in-your-face, rude, obnoxious, and has a threatening air about him. He would have no qualms about raising his voice to customers. You feel like he can be very vindictive (move over, Michael Corleone). Other hotels I stayed in were run by polite, sophisticated, well-mannered people. He seemed kind of thuggish compared to them.

I was extremely thankful and relieved once I left this place, and will never return again. After I left, everytime I passed by this place by bus, it brought me bad memories. In a paradise like Ravello, this place was like the ghetto.

A Place in the Sun

We are from New Zealand and had been recommended San Michele Hotel by New Zealand friends. We found it to be conveniently positioned for buses and boat excursions to bays up and down the coast and to the island of Capri.

Our room was quiet with a beautiful view and the management and staff of this small family run hotel were extremely helpful and friendly from our host Nicola, our receptionist Emiliano, our waiter Leopoldo and the chef Guissepe. The food was just fabulous and a special dietry requirement was incorporated into our menu without any trouble at all. Coming from New Zealand, we were pleased to have had the opportunity to experience the delights of Italian food as, in the words of Nicola, typical Italians have it.

The hotel has its own access to the sea for swimming and the waters are beautifully clean and clear.

The whole coast is a challenge for people with mobility problems and San Michele has many steps to negotiate but we looked upon this as a means to improve our fitness (we are both in our sixties). Staff ensured that we had help with our bags.

We were delighted with our stay there.

Terrible experience

from A TripAdvisor Member
Just back from our holiday and felt so strongly about this hotel I had to write straight away. We had booked a room with a window sea view for one night, and then to move into a room with a balcony and sea view for the second night. We arrived at 11am to be told our room would not be ready until 3pm! We had to wait 4 hours when we were tired and just wanted to relax in our room. The next morning after a tasteless breakfast, we were more or less pushed out of the room at 10am to move into the other one, when we had only got the room at 3pm the previous day!! We told the maid we would move when we were ready and the next thing the owner rings the room and starts roaring down the phone at my boyfriend!! I couldn't believe his complete lack of manners. He then came down to the room and accused me of lying regarding the terms of the booking! Needless to say we were disgusted with his treatment of his customers. On top of that awful experience of being shouted at, the food was terrible and one sensed it was cheaply produced. The coffee was more like warm milk with no real Italian taste of coffee. The bread was stale, the fish was drowning in lemon juice, the vegetables overcooked and totally inedible. The best thing about half board was the bottle of local wine you got with your meal!

Aswell as all this, the hotel is 5km from Ravello and 1km from Amalfi, so we were reliant on a very poor bus service to get us around. We ended up spending €50 on taxis because we were so sick of sitting at the bus stop waiting forever, only for the bus to sail past us full to the brim of newly-arrived tourists. All in all, it ruined our time in Amalfi/Ravello. Positano all the way!!
Management Response from amalfi
Dear Tripadvisor operators and community,
we're very sorry to read about a so negative review :-(((.

We're a family run hotel on the sea with only twelve rooms and the presence on Trip Advisor of so many positive comments for us indicates what's what's the level of satisfaction of the guests who leave our place.

The fact of being on some prestigious international guides show how experts of the sector keep us in consideration.

We've never thought about using this right TA tool who gives voice to the owners like me who are too much times seen like people who want to steal something and we're only sorry to not be able as we'd like to show how things work in our hotel, what's the atmosphere and how relationships are with our clients.

Honestly, this is the last option we had in our mind, but we can't be silent while a person writes only his point of view and when it includes also falseness.

First of all, our check - in procedure should start from 2.00 p.m. , it's our choice to welcome our guests prior that time when it's possible.
He arrived at 11.00 and his room, a double room with two sea viewed windows, was ready, but we agreed together to accomodate him in a room with sea view and terrace, so they decided to go elsewhere and to come return later.
I really did not see any problem in this as we decided together.
The day after, as we agreed on several e-mails, they should have change room.
We ask our customers to leave the rooms at 10.30 a.m. as it seems to us a reasonable time and we don't damage neither the person who's leaving nor the one who is arriving.
The maid asked the customers to leave the room in time as all the normal people do, but they told that they wanted to leave it later as they took the it only at 3.00 p.m.
As the maid told me this, I phoned him and then I reached him into the room to clarify as I did not undestand by phone.
He repeated again that he wanted to leave the room at 3.00 p.m. .
After this he also asked me a discount and we agreed also about this.

I asked his partner to check the reservation e-mails, but she never wanted..

In this review, they also write that the food was not good, the breakfast tasteless and myself lackless of manner.

They maybe forget the rumours that they did during one night after that they enjoyed our wine.

This is not our fault if they decided to use taxi instead of public transportation.

By the way, all the e-mails are at disposal to confirm that what I'm telling it's the absolute truth.

We just hope that my reply will make people understand my position ,that may be target of not right attacks.

Kind regards,
Nicola Dipino.

Gods Garden

I wanted to wake up somewhere beautiful on my 40th birthday and I did, Villa San Michele is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. We stayed a week bed and breakfast and it was not long enough. Nicola and his staff are great the Hotel beautiful with breath taking views of the Amalfi coast. We really feel we stayed in god's garden ate his food and drank plenty of his wine. Big thanks to Claudio for his driving and taking us to 2 fantastic restaurants. We will be back time and time again.

Fabulous views, food and service

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is an utterly charming hotel with great views of the coast from the rooms. Relaxing on the balcony in our room was heavenly. We did the half board and all the food was delicious with two choices each for first and second courses -- we had seafood and pasta on several nights during our 4 days here (I noticed a large collection of regional Italian cookbooks in the reception area.) The service is friendly and helpful. They helped us arrange a car transfer to Naples train station with a detour in Pompeii so we could do a 3 hour tour on our own -- our driver Claudio was great, even navigating around the flock of sheep in the road!

I plan to return and stay longer the next time!

A delight

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel is utterly charming; I have taken away a memory of our white and blue room full of light, especially first thing in the morning. As we saw when we took a trip to Salerno by boat, it is exceptionally low down the cliff - a mere 15 metres or so above the sea and the light of sun on sea fills the fills the room. It is true that there are lots and lots of steps which might be an issue for some, though I think in that case the Amalfi coast generally might not be your best choice - cliffs and steps are everywhere.

The welcome from the family is warm and friendly, and they are a mine of useful information if you are planning a trip. The food is good. We had travelled from Tuscany via a series of hotels and it was the only one to offer freshly squeezed orange juice in the mornings and dinner was excellent, especially the freshly made pasta, fish and seafood.
I've rarely enjoyed a hotel stay so much.

The Hidden Gem of the Amalfi coast

from A TripAdvisor Member
First discovered by accident in 1998, we return whenever we can. Long week-ends or full blown breaks this family run hotel cannot be beaten. The location is stunning, the views tireless, the food, simple but excellent ( as a chef I am difficult to please) the friendliness and warmth of all the staff and family is unsurpassed.Looking forward to returning in May 2006, friends have booked for September. The ultimate place to relax, we sometimes even venture out.
