Nice hotel -- service in need of vast improvement

from A TripAdvisor Member
Our family -- my wife, three teen-aged children, and I -- spent 5 nights at the Excelsior at the culmination of a vacation to Greece and Italy. To do it again, I might have chosen to start in Rapallo rather than to end there, since it seems that our experience here was made worse by the inevitable comparisions that we kept drawing to the other beautiful properties at which we stayed. Our collective impression of the hotel, when all was said and done, was mixed at best -- certainly not what one would hope for given the money spent there.

Some specifics, first to the positive:

-The views from nearly everywhere in the hotel were breathtaking. We had two rooms with water views, one a junior suite with no balcony and one deluxe with balcony (nearly unnecessary) that overlooked the Mediterannean and the city surround.

-The staff at the front desk could not have been nicer or more helpful -- exactly what one would and should expect from a five-star hotel.

-I'd be remiss not to single out Rosario, the bartender in the Yachting Bar who was extraordinarily friendly and helpful.

The negatives:

-When we first arrived at the hotel after a long drive from Lake Como, we were warmly greeted by the reception staff (obviously NOT a negative), but while we were checking in, my kids refused to sit in the furniture in the lobby -- the upholstery was that dirty (and we're talking teens here, not a bunch of fussy old ladies!)

-The deluxe room was certainly no better than ordinary -- not large, and a bathroom that was quite cramped. The beds were adequate, but not extraordinarily comfortable. We were forced to change rooms by the fact that a prior guest had smoked in our non-smoking room -- that, I realize, is not the fault of the hotel...however, at these prices, I would expect better.

-My most serious complaint however is reserved for the food service. We ate a total of 4 meals at the hotel, excluding breakfasts -- and 3 of the 4 were among the worst dining experiences I've had anywhere, much less at a hotel that's been given 5 stars. Only once did our order arrive properly (that was a meal that my wife and I had alone -- and I would cynically add that they only had two chances to get it wrong, not five). Still, I could have more easily swallowed the E22 charge for a plate of spaghetti and tomato sauce if the dish had shown up at the same time as the rest of the family's meal -- but it arrived 15 minutes late, with not so much as an explanation or the slightest hint of apology. Likewise our lunch for five showed up in three different shifts, and once again the staff seemed oblivious to the fact that this might be less than acceptable. The dining staff in general appeared undertrained and overwhelmed -- and not just by American standards. We had no experience that could compare to this hotel anywhere else on our tirp.

In all, the Excelsior was a disappointing note to end our trip on. Not a horrible choice -- but one that suffered from comparison to the others we enjoyed on our vacation.

Very nice hotel

from Tottiisahottie
I stayed at the Excelsior in May 2006 with my family.
This hotel offers a great location and views. I had booked two rooms with a view of the bay, but when we got there, we were given two rooms with a view of the parking lot.
I produced the confirmed email they sent in regards to the bay view and they changed our rooms.
Make sure you ask for a room that faces the water and on an upper floor, as you will hear terrace noise if you are on a lower level.
The breakfast was nice and the staff very helpful.
The cab drivers do take advantage of you if you're staying here, beware and get a quote or price before you get in a cab.
My bed was very bouncy and housekeeping replaced it.
Overall I would stay here again, very relaxing.

I disagree

I've stayed at the Excelsior twice (both in June, both for conferences, with an extended weekend after). This is a good hotel. However, for the price (well over 300 euros a night), I would only rate it as 'average' or even slightly disappointing.

Good points:
- most rooms have stunning views of the sea or marina area
- the bar and breakfast areas also have beautiful views
- the staff are friendly without being 'in your face'

Improvement points:
- the noises at all hours (banging doors, the sound of what I think is furniture being moved against marble floors). This is unfortunately very common in Italian hotels but at this price I expect my room to be noise-free most of the night and in the afternoons
- the breakfast buffet features canned fruit - not exactly what one would expect from a "5* Luxe" property
- the pool is beautiful but small, and dominated by kids (not the kids' fault - it's just a small pool)
- the rooms (I had a normal double) are not any larger or better decorated than a typically maintained 10 year old Sheraton
- the mattress was OK but very bouncy
- the gym is tiny with only a few basic machines

In summary I'd say the setting makes the hotel. Inside, the Excelsior doesn't really 'excel'.

Perfect hotel. The best we ever stayed in

from navena
This place was awazing. We were in Italy for 2 weeks and Rapallo was the second stop on our entire-country tour. We were impressed as soon as we arrived. There was a problem with our reservation (Orbitz messed something up) and the hotel was very accomodating and took care of things for us. I couldn't have been happier. The restraunt was very elegant and the food was incredible. We loved our room, which was very nice and had a beautful view of the harbour. Rapallo was great--we took the train to the Cinque Terre for one day and explored the town the next. The town is a seaside town and we really liked it. This was the best hotel in town, from what we saw. Highly recommended.

Oustanding hotel, beautiful location

from John_S_2004
We stayed at the Excelsior Palace April 30 to May 5. This hotel was a splurge for us on our trip to Italy but came highly recommended by our travel consultant Donna Salerno at travelwizard...she was right.

We had a wonderful room with a small balcony facing the Mediterranean..Ligurian Sea..the front desk staff was warm and helpful....the Yachting Bar staff was extremely pleasant especially the very helpful Rosario...the terrace for breakfast and aperitif time had a beautiful view of the sea...

I used the spa for a massage and mud treatment and it was wonderful...we had been travelling for eight days from the States when we got here and we even just took half a day to sit at the wonderful pool that is right on the sea...

Like I said the Excelsior was a pricier than our normal vaction hotels but worth every penny...an outstanding experience

reached paradise

from donnamaria329
My husband and I reached paradise on April 17th. We drove across Italy from Venice to Rapallo. That was an adventure in itself. When we reached the exit for Rapallo, we just followed the road to the sea. Upon entering the driveway to the Excelsior Palace hotel, we couldn't believe how beautiful it was. The lobby is spectacular with an airly feel.

The staff knew who we were upon entering the lobby. They immediately gave us a message we had from friends. Camile, the concierege, was friendly and extremely helpful. She was a pleasure to talk to and offered us tons of advise. They even upgraded our room.

Upon entering our room a note of welcome from the hotel manager and a bottle of amaretto awaited us, as well as our name on the television. A breathtaking view of our room was overlooking the Liguerian Sea. When looking to our left, moored were the most beautiful and luxurious yachts. Looking to our right was the Italian Riveria, Portofino and Santa Margherita. Our room was on the 5th floor and we thought we were in heaven. At night the moonlight poored into our room. The bed was very comfortable as well as the spacious bathroom with a realy hair dyer, not one that is like a vacuum for the hair.

The breakfast room was warm and inviting and the food was delicious. The sevice from the wait staff was impeccable. The hotel had all these lovely terraces and intriguing staircases leading to the sea. The pool, not open ths time of year, was beautiful and looked like it was part of the sea.

I had a facial at the Beauty Farm. Francesa made me feel so relaxed I didn't want to get off the table.

The bartenders in the Yachting Bar were friendly and entertaining to talk with. We had a light dinner there one night and it was very good.

Needless to say we will return to this hotel again in the summer when the pool is open and Rapallo in full swing. The hotel in itself is so luxurious that we felt pampered and truly in paradise.

Expensive but worth it!

from OBVIOUSNYC
My wife & drove from Florence to Rapallo on a 10 day vacation. You definitely need a car if you are staying in this hotel. Taxis are way too expensive. The hotel is very modern with excellent services. The pool is fantastic and you are on a cliff overlooking the Med Sea. The water is like the carribean - crystal clear. We had an ocean front room - great view but no balcony. If you trying to cut back no need for the balcony - the hotel has several large outdoor areas where you could have a drink overlooking the sea. Breakfast is fruit and pastries - ok. You can pay for eggs - we didn't. Spent the day by the pool and went to Santa Margherita for dinner. That town is special - tons of restaurants and a lot going on - much more than Portofino which is stuck up and more $$$. Concierge service was adequate nothing special. Massage was a waste of $$$. They do have a small gym - no AC. Lunches by the pool - easy $50 per couple for salads - but you're staying in a 5 star resort. Clean & very modern. Tons of Ferraris, BMW's, Mercedes in the parking lot. Make sure you head to Cinque Terre one day - its a must see. Would come back.

Great Staff

from A TripAdvisor Member
We loved it. We traveled from Paris by train the day we arrived. We rented a car in Genoa and were lost during rush hour. My wife was ready to shoot me by the time we reached the excelsior. When she walked in the door they greeted her by name. I was back in good graces.....

The staff was very nice and went out of their way for us. Great service. Great room service. Great food. Very nice rooms. We loved it. They treated our two girls like queens. The spa left something to be desired as I think they were short staffed at that time of year.

Most shops in Santa Margharita or Portofino offer discounts to guests of the excelsior.

When we checked out the front desk gave us great information about how to drive in Florence, etc. Very Very helpful. We will be back very soon.

Beautiful Hotel Excelsior View!

from susiegio
We just returned from our vacation and spent two of our nine days in Portofino and Rapallo. The Excelsior Hotel's view was incredible! After coming from the Hassler Hotel (at the top of the Spanish steps in Rome which was supposed to have the best view) we were blown away with the views of Portofino and Rapallo from our room. We had two rooms, a standard for our kids (room 401) and a mini suite for us (room 407). We had a corner room which offered views from two walls and couldn't have been happier. The hotel boasts having a spa but it was impossible to get any services done. (Book ahead!) We were referred to Bella Napoli for dinner because we didn't want anything too fancy after coming from Rome. It was one of our favorite meals! They took such great care of us and the food was excellent. It is walking distance from the hotel.

Overall, this was our favorite hotel on our trip because of the views!

Lovely

from Bufind
A beautiful place to stay while on the Riviera. I would stay there again in a heartbeat. Rapallo is a lovely town and the hotel is a 3 minute walk to the waterfront and the restaurants/shopping. The pool (inifinity) is lovely and worth taking time at. It overlooks the Bay of Rapallo. The restaurant is above average and dining on the bay outside is worth it! The breakfasts are very nice. We had a nice room with a balcony and a great view of the Bay of Rapallo and to the right was Portofino. Much less expensive and nicer than staying in Portofino and only a 5 minute drive to Portofino anyway.

Top Local Tips for Rapallo

Location A good starting point for discovering the area (cinque terre, portofino, mountains etc.)

Eating out Try to get off the main street for restaurants as the main area is mostly pizzerias. There is a lovely restaurant called Lucca in the harbour area.
