Top Local Tips for Praiano

Driving there is not for the faint of heart The roads wind, curve and curl their way around the cliff sides with 300 foot drops to the Mediterranean below (sometimes on both sides). The roads look like single lanes, but have two-way traffic. The scooter drivers seem to have a death wish, riding along at top speeds with their girlfriend and dog across the back, while chatting on their cell phones (no exaggeration!). They'll overtake at any opportunity. If you have a fear of heights, or are easily made car sick, perhaps consider somewhere else, or arriving by boat or bus. Our hotel had parking, which is something I never would have wanted to try to find on our own!

Go for an early morning swim Best swim of our trip was an early morning one, about 7.30am down in Marina di Praia. Only other people around were a couple of locals having a morning swim and a small fishing boat returning with the days catch of sardines to be met by the local population of cats ready to pounce on the boat and grab their fill.

You don't need your car in the summer. In the summer months you will find it much easier to use local public transport both when arriving and departing and also within the Amalfi Coast, than to use a car. The coast road becomes congested at narrow points, with coaches and hired cars as well as scooters, during the summer months, but there are a lot of buses and the train and coach services to Sorento are good too. In the winter, the buses are less frequent and the roads are less congested too, so a car can be useful betweel November and Easter.
