Fab hotel, fab pool, staff not helpful

Great hotel, great location, great pool but for the price you pay you expect a little 5* service but its not what we got. Staff seem very friendly but when we made different requests they were quite adamant to stick by "rules" & "hotel policy". We found the attitude very unfriendly and unhelpful. 2 great guys in bar/rest up by pool however.

Trick is to stay in one of about 5 rooms

We were pleasantly surprised to find our room among the 5 or so on the west balcony of the hotel, overlooking the cement pier, room 43 (its actually on floor five) to be exact. These five rooms are the only ones to get, as they each have their own sun deck, two chaise lounge chairs, a sun room, and a decent size sitting room connected to the bedroom.

Additionally, the concierge rocked, as John Carlo gave us real advice on what restaurants and attractions were actually worth the effort (including steering clear of Naples).

Lastly, we rented the pricey Riva wood boat out front (there are two), negotiated down to 700 Euro for the day, for a trip to Capri. While the quaint italian captain was very cute (although spoke zero english), the trip was as choppy as if we had rented a zodiac for 200 Euro and driven ourselves (the only option to drive yourself). In turn, I'd suggest taking the mass transit ferry for 20 Euro and saving the capital for shopping in Capri. We did end up renting the Zodiac on a calmer day for a short ride to Amalfi, which was very fun, as you cruise along the coastline, and get to drive yourself, parking the boat with the valet (yes, they have a valet for small boats in Amalfi), just handing them the ropes, jumping off and heading into town for lunch.

I could go over the restaurants as well, as we hit most of the hot spots, however would say they almost all served the same stuff (all good, even the dives). Just don't miss the bakery in the middle of town, or the courtyard at the Murat.

BTW, I've never written a review, however tripadvisor was responsible for finding the Covo for us, after finding the Sirenuse booked up. In turn, had our experience not been excellent, I wouldn't have even bothered, as I'm not one to lament mediocrity :)

Honeymoon perfection

We stayed here for 10 days of our honeymoon in mid May 2004. Thanks to tripadvisor reviews I knew to book a suite with a large terrace and it really made the difference.

Our room was wonderful with a lounge area, a 'patio room' (with a vine growing inside, great addition here and in the bar) and a huge terrace straight onto the sea. Be aware you hear the ferry boats arriving when you're this close but I felt it was worth it - they stop late afternoon.

Service was friendly, I'd recommend the private transfer from the airport, very good value. They also serve the best pizza in town (incl by the pool if you're very lazy)!

First off, let me agree with the other reviewers here, this is not a 5 star hotel. You get what you pay for. The room was basic. The staff ranged from genuinely helpful to rude. That said, the location can't be beat. Our veranda overlooked the beach. It also had an excellent breakfast.

One bit of advice. Porters will take your luggage to or from the hotel for 4 euros per piece of luggage. It's worth it.

Great place to visit

The Hotel Covo Dei Saraceni is a very good hotel in a great location, worth the price. Transportation leaves you in the middle of town to walk down to the hotel which is easy to find. The town porters deliver your luggage to the hotel for four euros per bag. The steepness of the streets and steps makes it worth that. The staff of the hotel is very helpful. The rooms were excellent. When a strike blocked the roads from Napoli and our transportation back to Napoli was delayed, they handled it beautifully. Dinner at the hotel restaurant was very good, but the staff turned surly when we asked for them to divide the bill on three credit cards or charge it to three rooms. (They could do it for two but did not want to do it for three.) They eventually relented and divided by three, but it took a long time, which we took as passive aggression. The atmosphere on the terrace with Italian music was very pleasant.

Just perfect!

We will be staying at the Covo for the 7th time this year - we've always had the same room and to awaken in the morning with the sun streaming through the balcony doors and the sound of the Mediterannean drifting into the room is just perfect! The service is always excellent and all the staff are very helpful and friendly, advising on everything from day excursions to best restauraunts - of which the Covo's own is definitely one. OK, it's not like some 5 star hotels but it's at least as good as a 4 star and about the same sort of price. Rooms, like the rest of the hotel, are comfortable, clean and spacious. We can't recommend it highly enough!

Covo is no deluxe hotel

We changed room after a leaky shower and dirty room. The second room offered was just as bad, with furniture that belonged in a skip. Awful minibar, dirty walls and unfriendly staff. Only good thing was the view from the room. Never again!

An enchanting town

We spent two weeks in the Amalfi Coast and Positano is just breath taken! It is a charming, cute little town close enough to everything. Covo dei Saraceni Hotel has a great location and is one of the very few hotels with a pool. We were steps away from the restaurants, shops, concerts and the ferry. It was very convenient to just walk out of the hotel and take day trips to Amalfi, Ravello, Sorrento, Salerno and Capri. We look forward to going back.

Covo is great value

Covo dei Saraceni is not Sirenuse or San Pietro; it's also half the price of those two properties. The location in town is convenient for all restaurants, shops, boats to Capri and the comment about lack of a gym is hysterical. The entire town of Positano is a gym! Once you walk from top to bottom, you've had a great work out. Which is another + for Covo; if you're not a great walker, you're already in the middle of everything. I'd return again and again to this comfortable, well run hotel.

Loved the Covo de Saraceini

After reading mixed reviews on the Covo I was pleasantly surprised to find a lovely hotel, conveniently located on the beach, and close to restaurants and shopping. Months before our trip I would send emails to Gino and Aldo with questions on Positano, diving, trips to Capri, restaurant reservations, etc. and always received a quick, gracious reply. Our room was a good size (the bathroom was huge!) with a beautiful balcony and a fantastic view of the beach and sea. The restaurant served delectable food -- and the wait staff singing along with the guitar player was an added treat! I did not find the location loud and, other than the bar closing rather early, cannot complain about anything. I highly recommend the Covo!

Top Local Tips for Positano

Wedddings They love weddingss here and the destination is stunning. The ceremonies at the civil town hall are outdoors with amazing views and the town mayor conducts the ceremony. If you want a wedding to rmember with photos that will be treasured forever go here! When you leave as a married couple every random passer by shouts congratulations (in Italian!)

Steps and walking Be prepared to walk up and down steps. I do not see how inactive people or those with strollers could get around town. It was very romantic and fun, but we did have to take a few breathers when walking to the top of the town!

Go to Chez Black Great restaurant, right on the beach, casual. The food is excellent
