Very poor

Never again! After staying in some lovely Tuscan hotels this was a real disappointment. The room was so small that it felt like a prison cell and it was dark and dingy. The bathroom was not much better and had definitely seen better days. It felt more like a one/two star than a four star. Thank goodness we had only booked for one night!

Excellent location for tourists sites.

The location of the hotel was excellent for sight seeing. Although the leaning tower could be seen from the bedroom windows, the view from the roof was stunning. The hotel was clean and the staff helpful. Staff on the reception desk spoke very good English and were willing to find times of trains and buses for visits further out from Pisa.
No tea/coffee making facilities in rooms.
Many tourist shops and tourist restaurants in same street as hotel.
Would visit again because of location and cleanliness but do not consider hotel 4*.
However have been told that it is in the process of being refurbished.

Good Value Hotel

We stayed for 5 days the end of June & found the hotel to be very good. Contrary to earlier reviews the room we had was at the back of the hotel & very quiet. The room was clean & airy and looked as though the bathroom had recently been installed. There was a very powerful aircon & tv if you wanted it. Ideally placed for the sights ( only 2 mins from leaning tower) we thought it was good value for money & would recommend it !!!

Expedia should be ashamed to recommend this hotel as a 4 star. Seriously this is the most disgusting hotel I've ever encountered. We were so depressed upon checking in that we had to go get an alcoholic beverage (and I'm really allergic to alcohol.) This is what I would imagine a hostel to be. Really ugly, really dirty, really bad service. I'm duly traumatized.

Not the place to stay.Grand it is not

Stayed in the hotel in April and the only good thing about it was that we only booked for one night.The rooms were dirty and shabby just like the rest of the hotel. The breakfast in the morning was the worst we had whilst staying in Italy. Only use this hotel if you cannot find anywhere else to stay.

There were 3 in our party and we had one room at the front (twin) and one at the rear. The room at the front was a good size, clean and tidy. It did however, suffer from a lot of road noise that went on into the early hours. The room at the rear (double), was big enough to house the bed, with no room to lay the suitcase open on the floor, again, we could not fault the cleanliness, although we were short of a light bulb in one of the lamps. At 12.30am, someone (I presume a bar/restaurant adjacent to the hotel) decided to empty their empty glass bottles into a bin, thus sounding like a visit to a recycling plant. In its favour, the location is great for the attractions and you have everything on your doorstep. Personal opinion is that this would be a 2 star in the UK and it is likely that if US tourists are used to luxury and not accustomed with the slightly 'quirkier' European ways, that its possible that some of the charm of the hotel would be lost if a good night's sleep is required. There was some building work going on during our stay, again, we were not affected, as we were out for most of the daylight hours. I would say that this is only a hotel for a night only stop off, before going onto another destination. If reserving a room, ask to stay as high up in the hotel as you can, as this may prevent some of the rising road and 'scooter' traffic noise. Breakfast is typically European and may not be to everyone's taste, but if you want what you get at home, then why travel? As a footnote the English spoken at the hotel is impeccable and the barman was a sheer delight! Somewhat faded in terms of its obvious previous splendour, but I found the 'lived in' look refreshing after boutique chic.

Breathtaking views from hotel

I loved this hotel. We were given a very large room at the front of the hotel from which you could see the Tower from either of its two (!) balconies. There was a definite wow factor when opening the window blinds and seeing the view. We also went out to the roof terrace for further stunning views. The barman was lovely. Will defintely go back!

Unfortunately I had booked this hotel before I had read the reviews....what a waste of money!

The hotel from the outside didn't look very nice, even in comparison with the buildings around it...

The rooms we small, very very dated and just didn't feel clean....the bathroom was ok.

The barman was nice - the bar area very old. the sofa I sat on was grey, and in need of a clean - it smelled of dirty greasy hair.....

Close to the tower - you definately can't see it from the hotel though.

Stayed at Grand Duomo as part of a Globus Group for 1 night, 13 September. Room was very small, about the size of a postage stamp. Food was just about edible. Breakfast disappointing. Whatever happened to hot coffee. Bar was very nice as was bar tender and staff was helpful. Would not stay here again. In fact would not spend night in Pisa again. Big disappointment

Top Local Tips for Pisa

Tower and Duomo Get the tickets to the Tower tour early. I regret searching for a gelato first. I missed the opportunity to climb the Tower and tour the Duomo.

Away from the tower. Ensure you venture to the shopping area near the river and away from the tourist stalls.

Visiting the tower If you want to book your visit to the tower, you must do that at least 2 weeks in advance. I was there the weekend before Easter, did not book it and it was ok. They had tickets for two hours later, and in the mean time we visited other attractions (you can buy a combined ticket for everything except the tower). But during the summer it would probably be wise to book ahead. You only need one afternoon in Pisa.
