Stayed at Il Chiostro for a week this year -our fifth time at the Hotel! Obviously we love it. A great base for exploring southern Tuscany and Pienza itself is wonderful. The drive up the main street to the hotel is an experience not to be missed. (The street is pedestrian only but you are allowed to drop off your luggage.) Brass cojones required.

Great breakfast on the terrace overlooking the valley. Friendly staff. Good rooms. (We have always had a valley view room.) Fabulous pool.

My wife loves it, but I don't really care for the restaurant because it is not Tuscan country cooking, which is what I prefer in Italy. Go to Latte Di Luna or Da Fiorella in the rown, Dal Falco for a steak (outside the town and over the main road) or the trattoria called La Mensa Del Conte just outside the Porta a Prato. This does the best bruschetta in town and excellent pizza.

Top Local Tips for Pienza

Make a reservation for dining We ate at a number of the small restaurants in Pienza, which we thoroughly enjoyed. We did notice that the restaurants take reservations --particularly on weekends. So if you see a restaurant you're interested in trying, it is wise to stop and request a reservation (if possible). On a Friday night, we happened to go out early for dinner (7 pm) and were given the last table in the small restaurant. In our table near the door, we had a birds-eye view of a dozen or more couples who requested a table and were turned away because they didn't have a reservation.

Make Dinner Reservations Early We found out the hard way that the tiny restaurants in town only serve a limited number of people each evening. When they're full, they post a sign on the door saying so. That's it...no second chance! We went from place to place until we finally found a wonderful little place that was still accepting customers. The owners spoke no English, but they made beautiful food and even hugged us both at the end of the meal. Loved it!
