There are not many reasonably affordable castle-hotels in Italy bui this is one. The location on a wooded hilltop seen from afar is awe-inspiring; it's your dream castle site. Up close it's still impressive with mighty towers, massive walls, plenty of parking and pleasant reception. Swiss-owned, English spoken. We had the most expensive room, the only one left, which was everything a room in a castle tower should be - four-poster bed, oak panelling, mullioned windows on three sides, ornate beamed ceiling - magnificent. But many of the other rooms looked very ordinary and not particularly good value. The restaurant setting is splendid, a high-ceilinged baronial chamber with impeccable candlelit tables and first-class service; but food only so-so with little choice, not hugely expensive but still disappointing. For us, in that amazing bedroom, a wonderful one-night stay but wouldn't want to stay longer.
