Top Local Tips for Padua

Padova bus - city sightseeing We got the Padova city sightseeing bus and kept hold of our ticket which got us a discount when we went to see Giottto's fresco, it saved us six Euros each and the bus is a great way to see the city. If you fancy something different get the train to Lake Garda it's a really calm and nice break from the hustle and bustle and Padova, Verona and Venice. The train is really cheap and east to use - the self service ticket machines are the quickest and have English instructions you can even validate your ticket in the same machine you bought it from.

Whatever you do, don't miss Basilica del Santo! People come to Padova for the Scrovegni Chapel and the Giotto frescoes and often miss Basilica del Santo. It's a shame. If I could only do one or the other, I'd choose for Santo. It was overwhelming. One of the most beautiful churches in the world. Packed to the rafters with outstanding frescoes and relics. It was an incredible experience. We'll return to Padova in the future to go back to Santo. It's a shame that the English books covering the Basilica are so poor and insufficient.

Great Holiday Base Hotels in Padova are only slightly less expensive than nearby Venice and Verona; however, restaurants, bars and cafes in this city are very reasonable indeed - one third of the price of some of the places we visited elsewhere in Veneto. Residents have a very good standard of living, the streets are clean and there's a great selection of speciality shops and markets. Train tickets to Venice are about £6 return and Verona is just a little more, it's also very easy to take a regional or Eurostar service further south to Bologna, Florence and Rome.
