Top Local Tips for Orvieto

A wonderful driving experience. It's great having a car in this area, for seeing the various towns at your own pace - and for the drives themselves. Here are thoughts about renting: remember that smaller cars mean smaller trunks. We wished we had combined what we needed for the 3 days in Umbria into one bag, and left the other at our Rome hotel, where we were to return later. We barely squeezed (an I mean squeezed) two bags into the Alfa Romeo trunk. (We had booked a Fiat that was rated to have a lightly larger trunk, but they were out of them so gave us a free upgrade - which almost turned into a problem.) You don't want to have luggage in the back seat when you part to visit the sights or have lunch - as in any tourist area, there are pros who steal from cars.The second tip: know that you often won't be able to drive, let alone park, in the townn centers. Streets are too narrow and crowded as it is to allow tourists the folly of driving around aimlessly. Check your guidebook for info on each town ...
