Top Local Tips for Naples

Do not overlook Naples When we were planning our trip to Italy and Sicily, everyone we knew kept telling us the same thing: "Don't go to Naples!" They claimed it was dirty and dangerous and there was nothing to see. We could not avoid Naples as that was where our ship departed for Sicily, so we went against all advice. I'm so glad we did. Yes the city was dirty and probably dangerous but it was simultaneously fantastic. When we first arrived in the train station, we were so disappointed. It was so dingy and ugly. But when we got to our hotel in the newer part of the city, we started breathing a little easier. We found some great tourist sites (The Bay of Naples, Piazza Trento Trieste, San Carlo Opera House, etc.). During our 2 week vacation in various parts of Italy, we had one of the best meals we ever had in Naples at Caruso's, rooftop hotel dining. The city is young and so full of energy and there is something beautiful about this diamond in the rough. Go to Naples

Arte Card We found the Arte Card a good deal for us. We had to kind of scrounge around for the best deal, which is the three day Arte Card that allows access on all transportation, including trains to Pompeii and Sorrento. It also allows free entry to first sight visit, like Pompeii, and then a 50% reduction in price on the next two.

walk Napoli is a town that was made to be walked. Try not to take a taxi. You will get tired from walk. Napoli has lots of hills. But Napoli can only be visually and culturally understood on foot.
