Top Local Tips for Naples

Chaotic Naples My Italian cousins described Napoli as chaotic, and they are right. It is a remarkably dense city and that quickens the senses. One has to watch out, we were repeatedly told, for pickpockets and camera snatchers. Everyone seems to be on the take in some way -- for example, the hotel porter called a friend with a taxi to take us to the train station. That hack tried to double the fare for unspecified extras -- probably a payoff to the porter. Nevertheless, it is a very fun city to walk around. The National Archeological Museum is worth a visit. It houses the spectacular Farnese sculptures and also the "Secret Cabinet" -- rooms of ancient frescos and sculptures depicting erotic acts. Tickets to the secret cabinet require a special permit, but we were able to secure that at entry for a reasonable time.
