We loved the Hotel Santa Lucia – for its location by the little harbour of Santa Lucia and Castel dell'Ovo, for the warm reception we received, and for the wonderful food, both at breakfast and especially at dinner. Most sites are within easy walking distance, making this a good choice for our stay in Naples.

Top Local Tips for Naples

cab from the airport Don't let them talk you into an exorbitant fee! The trip from the airport to most places downtown should cost no more than 25 Euro. And don't be fooled by guidebooks that tell you you'll only need half a day to visit Pompeii -- we got to Pompeii by 10 am (it's an easy trip from Naples) and by 4 we were still wandering around that extraordinary place. Take your time -- there is much to see, and a careful visit will reward you at almost every turn.

Beware of the shonky taxi drivers Taxi drivers in Naples can be very pushy. They want to drive you to all the sites and wait for you. They don't like to take 'no' for an answer. When we were leaving there was a train strike on. We had a taxi driver following us around the train station trying to get us to agree to go to Rome with him for a huge fare. We had already paid for our train ticket so didn't want to do this. He made me very nervous.

Naples Airport The airport is not welcoming at all. Staff have the attitude that Naples is full of rubbish so their attitude is as well! On both arrivng and departing the ground staff could not supply buses to transport us to/from the terminal. When arriving they made us queue in 35 degree heat with no shelter to get past passprt control. Waited for ages for our baggage which was supposed to be arriving on one belt which they then changed as the belt would not work - then somebags came through on one belt and the rest on another belt the other end of the baggage hall - but didn't tell anyone!
