Top Local Tips for Monterosso Al Mare

Hiking the trail The trail from Monterosso to Vernazza (about 2-2 1/2 hours hike) is scenically the best of all the trails (in our opinion) and Vernazza is universally rated (for good reason) as the most beautiful of the Cinque Terre villlages, so if you're only going to do one leg, this is the one to do.

Arriving It's a good idea to confirm your reservation while you are one the road. If coming by train, call when you get to town and they will drive you up the hill. When coming by train at night, make sure someone stays awake or you might miss your stop.

Heaven on earth Getting to the Cingue Terre is easier than most people think. Take the train from Milan or Rome: it stops right in the middle of Monterosso Al Mare -- the largest of the five small towns -- and the walk to any hotel is short, and there are cabs anywhere if you are staying on the hill. Taking a boat ride on the Mediterranean to visit the other small towns, and walking the pathway between the five towns is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Be careful: if you have trouble with challenging terrain, it can be difficult, but I've seen people in the 60's and 70's do it, as long as you're healthy and active. The food is wonderful, the townspeople could not be friendlier and more helpful. And everyone speaks English. Just be a little patient: Americans are always getting antsy and frustrated when they don't get what they want immediately. They Italians enjoy life, they take it a bit slower. Relax: see Italy the way the Italians do it, and you'll come away invigorated and relaxed.
