My friend and I had heard about this man, Andrea, and his hotel by word of mouth. We arrived after dark by train, and the rooms were all booked.... our fault. But b/c we had called ahead, Andrea's wife had cooked us some food along with some wine. He sent us on our way to watch the firework show- a local town celebration was going on. When we returned, he had transportation waiting to take us to a nearby hotel. When we awoke the next morning, they picked us back up and brought us to the biggest room- a beautiful terrace overlooking the mtns and ocean. (Keep in mind, this is a beach town, so there won't be any AC.)He reserved us a spot on the beach and even told us places to go eat. He invited the two of us to swim in the ocean with him during his afternoon swim and asked us to join him for a bite and drink- swimming and sitting out by the ocean afterwards is his every day routine. Andrea's family has had this chunk of land for generations, and it truly is his passion to be hospitable... he has many returning friends that are loyal and who have experienced his "over and beyond" effort. Before we left, he took me next door to a wine store and helped me pick out a good Cinque Terre wine. He also gave us some of his home made She-oc-etra, (phonetically spellled...). As a female, I felt very safe and taken care of... he was like a grandfather to us! His family and friends popped in and made us feel at home and welcome as well. What a wonderful experience. And oh how I wish I could be there right now! if you're going to 1 of the 5 lands, go stay here!

Sr. Poggi Gracious Host

Twenty some years ago we first stumbled upon La Spiaggia Hotel at lunchtime. Sr. Poggi warmly welcomed us with wine from his vineyard and shared a scrapbook collection of news clippings, letters and photos. Not open for lunch, he neverless offered to make us some seafood rissoto. A half hour later we were enjoying a feast memorable to this day. Last fall, whle on a Seaborne cruise, we had an opportunity to again visit Cinque Terre. We were delighted to find Sr. Poggi alive and well, with his family thriving at the La Spiaggia. We enjoyed wine from his own vineyard, lively conversation, and sharing of a now printed version of his scrapbook. Sadly, no more meals except for guest's breakfasts. But he called his friend a few blocks away, told him the type rissoto we like, and sent us off with a bottle of his wine and the book. As we finished lunch, Sr. Poggi bicycled by and insisted we join him for a farewell Limoncello toast at the nearby bar. Memories of a man like Sr. Poggi are what make travel so enjoyable for us.

Andrea Poggi was invaluable

We arrived in Monterosso with no reservations and checked out rooms in 4-5 hotels. We had read great reviews about La Spiaggia, but wanted to decide for ourselves. La Spiaggia was the best in our sampling and Andrea Poggi, the owner, was a treasure with his daily advice on where to go and where to eat. A highlight was a restaurant that specialized in mushroom dishes in a little town that was not even on the map. While we were uniformly disappointed with the breakfasts in Italy, La Spiaggia was our best experience with its warm from the oven croissants. Our room overlooked a bustling, but not noisy, street with the sea in the background. We can't wait to go back.

What a delightful hotel!! I was uncertain as there was no online booking facility (I had to call Italy to make the booking), but we got the most delightful surprise!!
Andrea the owner was so warm and lovely and funny I instantly felt a grampa-like bond with him! (perfect English by the way) A very warm welcome (and a sample of his home-grown wine) awaited us. Our room had the most enormous balcony and view of the coast and water. We were SO close to the water the sound of the waves crashing soothed us all night. The room was basic (bathroom was impressive though) but we didn't need anything more with such a lovely view and lovely host. We felt so at home!
The sort of place I would love to go back to every year.

Great Hotel La Spiaggia in Monterosso

We recently stayed at La Spiaggia for 3 nights, our
4th visit to Monterosso and the Cinque Terra region.
La Spiaggia Hotel is in a beautiful location facing the sea, with places to eat nearby and the other 4
towns are easily reached by boat. Mr. Poggi, the owner, is very welcoming and entertaining with his
dry humour. We enjoy his special wine on arrival and
conversations on various topics. We especially
appreciated his front desk and reservations clerk, Ilaria. What a delightful and personable young woman!
Ilaria is a very warm, genuine and pleasant part of
the hotel. Ready and willing to be of assistance in
any situation. Each time we return to La Spiaggia, we
look forward to seeing her again. Ilaria is definitely a great asset to La Spiaggia; always
pleasant and smiling to all. We hope to visit again soon.

Wonderful Visit

We spent 3 fabulous days at La Spiaggia in Monterosso
upon the recommendation of a friend. When we arrived,
Andrea, the proprietor, greeted us with a big welcome and a glass of wine from his own vineyard. He later showed us the vineyard on the terraced mountain, visible from the hotel. We enjoyed a seaside room with balcony, which I would highly recommend. The price was unbeatable, the view beautiful, and the rooms were
recently updated, neat and clean. Andrea was readily available, and even introduced us to returning guests.
He told entertaining and interesting stories about his
family, himself, and his village. He also joined us
impromtu for a glass of wine and humorous conversation.
Upon departure he surprised us with a bottle of his
wine to bring home to the friends that had recommended
La Spiaggia, plus another bottle for ourselves. Our experience there was very personable and special. We
will certainly return to La Spiaggia on our next visit
to Cinque Terra, and highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Italy.

La Spiaggia and Andrea Poggi- A must in the Cinque Terre

About six years ago we spent 3 days at La Spiaggia in the Cinque Terre. We enjoyed it so much, we planned our 10th wedding anniversary trip around visiting Cinque Terre and specifically, La Spiaggia and the owner, Andrea Poggi, again. It is a wonderful hotel with great accomodations. It has excellent views of the water and is very clean. The staff is very gracious and helpful and Andrea will make sure that your stay is wonderful. Andrea goes out of his way to make sure you eat at the best restaurants wherever you are going and helps to make the reservations for you. He also makes sure to help you with other travel plans within Italy. He speaks about a half dozen languages so you are assured that he will be able to help you! We highly recommend this hotel. A trip to Cinque Terre is a must when traveling in northwest Italy and a stay at the La Spiaggia is too.

Andrea Poggi Sooo Helpful

My wife and I had a short but wonderful stay. Andrea was especially helpful and gracious in advising us on where to stay as we wound our way up the Italian coast and on to the French Riviera. (He specifically warned us away from an overnite stay in Genoa due to the ongoing boat show.) The rooms were neat and clean. We had a great view from our bathroom window.

My wife and I just spent 4 nights at the La Spiaggia Hotel in Monterossa al Mare, Cinque Terre, Italy. We loved it. The owner couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. Whenever we went to any of the five little towns we would phone him on our cell phone and he would tell us the best place to eat in that town.
It's a very friendly, personal, hotel.

Our Return to La Spiagga

We just returned from a wonderful two-week adventure in Italy. The highlight of our trip was our three-night stay at La Spiaggia in Monterossa. We had stayed there five years ago and always looked forward to returning. Friendly owner Andrea Poggi, his wife Isobella and her daughter Debra are all so helpful and hospitable. They all remembered us and made us feel like part of their family. Andrea is so generous with his delicous Cinque Terra wine, and he always has an excellent recommendation for dinner. We love the Cinque Terre region and look forward to returning again some day. We would highly recommend La Spiagga Hotel with it's wonderful Italian hospitality and beautiful view of the sea.

Top Local Tips for Monterosso Al Mare

Foccacia Cinque Terre is famous for foccacia. Its everywhere, and so good. Try it.

Monterosso and nearby towns Most people only think about walking the 5 towns. You can easily take a train to just about anywhere. We took a train to Lucca one day and Pisa. It was easy and cheap. You can even go all the way to Florence. There is a monastery on the hill overlooking the town with a Van Dyck painting that is worth a walk. There are many many restaurants and nice cafes where you can watch the sunset. The beach is nice and there were some people in the water but in April it is too cold for me.

For families with children Though we were not traveling with young children, it was nice to see a little children's slide in the water at the beach. Also, in the old part of Monterosso is a small play park that even has a carousel. I hadn't seen these things mentioned in other posts, and thought parents might like to know.
