Top Local Tips for Monterosso Al Mare

Cinque terre trail The trail is a must when in the Cinque Terre. We took the train from Monterosso to Riomaggiore. The first leg of the trail is very flat and simple with great views. From Manarola to Corniglia is still easy but a little tougher. If you don't want to walk up 400 steps into the town of Corniglia, take the train at the base of the village to Vernazza or Monterosso. The last two legs of the trail are difficult but invigorating (about 90 minutes for each of the last two legs).

Location Any of the 5 village/towns in CT are great to stay in. We chose Monterosso because we loved the beaches there. In 2005 we first visited the CT but stayed in Levanto just outside of the towns. From what we know now we would always recommend that visitors stay in one of the 5 towns rather than further out. That's just a personal thought but it's just so convenient after a day on the trails hiking or a long lazy day at the beach to be able to stay in the area rather than worry about catching a train back to somewhere outside the CT. We wasted alot of time waiting for trains to take us to the CT. The trains were often late.

Hiking We hiked from Riomaggiore to Monterosso. It's the ONLY way to see the Cinque Terre if you're in good enough shape to hike it. Much better than taking the train from city to city in my opinion. Memories that will last a lifetime and beautiful views await. Definitely worth the long hike to enjoy the scenery between the cities!
