Top Local Tips for Monreale

buses and trains beat driving in Palermo The buses are cheap (1 euro) and easy to use--transfer as many times as you want in the space of a few hours with a stamped ticket. Be sure to stamp your ticket when you get on the bus--inspectors really do come around and check! Palermo/Monreale makes a great base for day tripping--even trips as far as Agrigento (2 hours by train) are easy to do in a day. Contrary to what I was led to expect: trains run often, on time, and generally have new and well kept second class coaches. The bus to and from the airport (5 euro) is very fast if it's early or late in the day. It will beat the train at 5am and take about a half hour. Midday when traffic is dreadful I'd take the train to or from the airport--about 45 minutes and 4 euro.

Taverna del pavone Highly recomended but very disappointing. Food was supposed to be "typical cuisine " but was tourist bland. N.B. although not on the offered menu, any italian speaking tables were having Pizza which looked excellent.

Taverna del Pavone Trattoria At over 50 euros for 2, we had a tiny starter, main course and a small beer each - we're puzzled as it came highly recommended, yet did not come close to the other meals we had in Sicily which were all excellent.
