Hard to know where to start. More like 1200 than 500 metres from the metro. The sign on the outside says the hotel is 2* and not the 3* advertised. A non-smoking room smelt of smoke but the ash trays in the room were apparently for chewing gum! The air conditioning didn't work until the last day. (We were offered 2 rooms but the air con didn't work in these and we wanted to be together as a family in a quad room.) For 2 nights we had to sleep with the windows open and were all bitten remorselessly by mosquitos. Before the air conditioning was sorted there were power cuts. The windows opened on to an inner courtyard, just above the bins... lovely aroma. As the bill had to be paid in advance there was nothing we could do to apply any kind of pressure and no complimentary drinks nor anything else was offered by way of recompense. . The 'hotel' is on one floor and the lift (size of a shoe box) only works if you get in it and keep your finger on the button until it gets to the first floor. Not for the feint hearted. The stairs are steep, the room cramped, dark and there was mould in one corner on the ceiling. The fabric on the sofa bed was torn, the bin in the bathroom broken, the shower head leaked. Also the shower doors would not shut properly and it was necessary to encircle the shower with towels to collect the escaping water. The cubicle itself was best described as snug. The 'breakfast' was like nothing we have had before. Virtually everything was out of plastic bags (including the jam filled ‘croissants'), the bread was stale, the cereal old, the milk UHT and the meat looked tired. There was no cheese. The first drink is included but you are then told firmly that any more will have to be paid for as an extra. Other than a cleaner there was only one other person staffing the hotel (the same person night and day for all the time we were there). We were left minding reception whilst the lady went to check the air con. Goodness knows what we would have done if somebody had turned up. Other than to accuse us of taking a can of lager out of the fridge, which we had not, we were ignored by the woman when we left and she offered no assistance with problems with the lift as we were leaving (it stuck between the floors with all our luggage in) and did not offer so much as a thank you, goodbye or safe journey. All in all not the best holiday experience.

However, our first hotel in Florence and our last one in Pisa were excellent in comparison. Thankfully Milan is a lovely city and the shops and culture compensated. It is worth remembering that other than the main shops a lot are closed for August as the Milanese leave the city for their holidays.

Firstly the fact that they wanted the full amount at check in was not great. The price was more than 200 euro per night due to a fashion exhibition.

Further the receipt that they give you is hand written and I am not sure how official it is, therefore if you are claiming on companies expenses you will have issues.

Nevertheless the worst was that we have checked out on time and we have left our luggage at reception as our flight was leaving late afternoon so enough time for a walk down town.

Returning to pick the luggage we were blackmailed with a 400 euro charge with the excuse that we have broken the glass covering the room table. They refuse to give us the luggage unless we paid. I have asked them to show me the damage and at fist they did not even remember which room we were staying in. We started arguing and I have asked then to trace this with their cleaning staff instead of the customers but they were adamant on the fact that we had to pay. I have asked to speak to the manager and they called him on the phone but he did not speak English apparently!!
As we were running out of time, less two hours before the flight, I have asked them to call the police but they refused. As then I tried to call the police and they dropped the price to 200 euro and eventually they gave us our luggage as it seems that their cleaning staff has admitted that it was just an accident on their part.
