Top Local Tips for Milan

Always make reservations I went for a short trip (2 days, 2 nights) so didn't bother to get a good guidebook, e.g. TimeOut or Rough Guide. Found it hard to find a good place to eat (I'm big on food) and had to rely on my hotel reception. That was fine as they were willing to oblige but it meant that I didn't have reservations and anywhere good fills up pronto. So get a good guide book, plan where you want to eat, and call up in advance (I suggest calling at 10am on the morning you wish to dine, if not the evening before if lunching or for particularly large groups or popular places).

Duomo Cathedral is rather gloomy inside but the real treat is to take the lift or stairs to the roof and walk around the amazing scuptures.

Explore outside Milan as well In the middle of summer, the subway saved our feet and it has direct connections to Milano Centrale which was where we took two trips outside Milan to Lake Como and Cinque Terre. It's very easy to either buy tickets on trenitalia online or on the machines at the train station. I didn't bother with the long line-ups at the ticket counter and went straight for the ticket machines instead. They have english on them and it takes 5 minutes. This was my first trip to Milan and I loved every minute but would love to go back since we spent two days outside the city. We also booked a viewing of the Last Supper, which was like visiting a bank vault but was very informative with the guide.
