This is the first hotel review I have ever written despite having travelled a lot over the last few years. I felt compelled to write this review because of the fantastic service and great value for money Hotel Modena offered. The hotel was in the best location possible; right by the lake. The rooms and bathroom were really spacious, clean and comfortable. Gino was hilarious and kept us all entertained with his tales and jokes. I cannot see why anyone would say a bad word about Gino; in my opinion was one of the most helpful and charismatic hoteliers I have ever met. He cooked us bacon and eggs each morning, and when my friend was really ill one morning, he went out of his way to get her drinks and make sure she was ok.
Thanks for a great holiday Gino :)

Just returned from our second stay with Gino and his excellent staff at Hotel Modena. The location is second to none, 30 yards from lake and the excellent Social Club bar run by Bob and Jeannie.
The food is good, the place is spotless, Gino is extremely helpful even if he never does smile, he said that if he does his false teeth will fall into the food!!.
He is the only hotelier who transports luggage and guests to the coach pick up point. Do not be put off by negative reviews, this place is excellent. We met some people who have been going there for more than 10 years. That must say something.

Great location, food fine for price, owner very thoughtful, taking bags to and from coach stop etc. Spotlessly clean, looked newly refurbished, fresh towels provided without asking. Better than basic accommodation and service, deserves more than 2 stars.
Excellent food and service

This was excellent value for money. The owner/chef was great fun and the only one in Malcesine to provide transport for luggage to/from the coach stop. The food was superb for the budget allowed by the tour operator. Accomodation was basic but comfortable and very clean.
Here's the truth

Hotel Modena: I have today just returned from Malcesine and this hotel and feel I should right a couple of things. First of all, Hotel Modena is no more than 30mtrs from the lakeside. Secondly, it happens to be perfectly fine for a budget hotel. Yes the host, Gino, doesnt smile, but he is as funny as you like! If you go for half board, the evening meal is what you would expect from a budget hotel.. not a lot of it, but you will get a choice and it is perfectly adequate, as is the breakfast, which, being Italy, you have to expect to be cereal, coffee or tea, and toast. Gino really does go out of his way, and beyond the call on occasion, example being that this morning, we left at 5am, and he and his staff ensured breakfast was available. And we were also told that he is the only one that would do that! He will also take your case to the top of the road to meet your coach. If the room is too hot, turn off the radiator and open the window! There are no views here, but it is in the most beautiful little town on the lake. Just gorgeous. Id reccommend this hotel without hesitation, given that its at the cheaper end. PERFECT location, decent room (no tea and coffee or iron, but hairdriers in the room now), excellent service, OK food, and Gino will look after you! Enjoy! We certainly did!!

Stayed a week at Modena Malcesine. Room absolutely stifling - no fan available. Towels only changed once, even though the heat 35 degrees necessated showering at least twice a day they ended up smelly and soaking wet! Owners were quite rude and indifferent. Food quite poor. Didn't let it spoil our holiday we thought Malcesine itself was superb.

just walk walk the town, time and time again. You wont get lost, but you will wonder if you have passed that way before. Its a tiny town of beautifull cobbled streets and alleyways. Best cappuccino is port vecchia.
buses fabulous bus service but stops early beware
Cable Car Highly recommend taking the cable car (two of them, one rotating) to the summit of Monte Baldo. Stunning views from top and recommend walk down to next cable stop where there is a splendid restaurant, flower-decked, with superlative views offering an excellent lunch of meltingly fresh pasta and silky wine/
