Top Local Tips for Malcesine

The cable car Take the cable car up Mount Bolde the views are stunning and superb walking area.

Use Public Transport Dont confuse public transport in the UK and Italy. Go to the Bus Station and use the bus to up and down the lake, you'll see a lot more than from the ferry. They're reliable, clean and cheap. For a longer trip get a day ticket for 11 Euros (all day anywhere in the APTV (Verona) area). Use the trains for a blast across country.

What to do (and solo traveller experiences) I was a little worried about travelling solo, but I found Malcesine a very easy place to sit and people watch without ever feeling lonely. It's a painter's paradise. I recommend: visiting the castle, art exhibitions (Luciano Bonacini photographic exhibition was very good), walking on Monte Baldo after cable car ride (take high factor suncream), shopping, beautiful Verona is a must (use public transport which is easy and cheap), going on a Venice by night trip (but do expect masses of crowds in August) and the best trip of my week was an evening sailing on the tall ship Sierra Veronica to see the fireworks at Riva (best display I've ever seen ... and heard ... deafening booms riccochet around the surrounding mountains); it's so exhilarating, watching as part of the flotilla of ships in the harbour. Last thing; swimming in the lake is wonderful in August but don't try it without the little rubber swim shoes as the slippy underwater cobbles of the beach can easily cause a sprained ankle!
