Top Local Tips for Lucca

Walking the Ramparts Most of Lucca is surrounded by 40-ft. high Renaissance ramparts, topped with a wide, paved walking path flanked by trees. We walked its 2 1/2 miles or so at dusk on Christmas - towers silhouetted against the sky, church bells ringing the hours, lights coming on in homes and over the narrow streets, it was unforgettable. Not for small children - while the top is 40 plus feet wide, there are no guard rails. It is a beautiful walk at any time of day, a great way to get a sense of this ancient town.

Driving directions Very easy directions to find the hotel - follow signs in lucca for "centro" and arrive near the walls. Follow the wall until you find Porta Santa Maria. Enter the gate and make your first right, you'll pass the bicycle shop "Poli" - follow the road until you come to the piazza and church San Frediano (on your right). On your left is a small pedestrian-only street with large cement planter pots blocking traffic - squeeze through two sets of them (you actually are allowed to do this if you have a hotel confirmation with you) and then turn right on via Fillungo. Drive to the second left and the hotel is right there - you can't miss it because the sign is painted on the building right in front of you.

Buca SanAntonio Lucca's finest restaurant. Friendly, atmospheirc and great food. Its been a restaurant sionce at least 1782!
