As small city hotels go, I can’t fault the Albergo Diana in Lucca. We spent one night there in mid July 2006, as a stop-over on our way from Turin to Cortona in Tuscany. It’s easy to find by car, very centrally located, within the city walls of lovely Lucca and, as it comes with reasonably-priced parking, it’s a winner. We didn’t stay at the hotel itself, which seemed a bit old and pokey, but the annexe, only a couple of buildings away. This was a lovely old building, renovated sympathetically in the year 2000, we were told. We were quite impressed with the bathroom, which was both modern and spacious. The bed was very comfortable, the air-conditioning was in perfect order and we had a very good night’s sleep. All in all, the room couldn’t be faulted, and, at 93EUR without breakfast (they don’t seem to give you the option of having one on their premises), we thought the hotel was reasonably good value for money. What’s prompted me to write this review, however, was an extremely unpleasant experience I had, and which is partly at least the hotel’s fault. Upon arrival, the receptionist asked for our passports. I was reluctant to part with them but, as the receptionist assured me they wouldn’t forget to give them back to me on checking out the following day, I went along with it against my better judgment. Sure enough, the next day, I forgot about our passports, as did the receptionist. It was only 3 days later, when we were in Cortona, a town 100+ miles south of Lucca, that it occurred to me we’d left our passports at Albergo Diana. Of course, this is also our fault but I fail to see why a hotel would insist on keeping such important personal documents (is it legal?) and why they don’t have any system in place to rectify the problem of holding on to customers’ passports, which is such an obvious accident waiting to happen: they could either photocopy guests’ passports or ask for a mobile phone number or something so they have some means of contacting their guests in case something goes wrong. The reception did half-heartedly apologise for the inconvenience caused but they pointed out that it was also my fault and were unable to see how asking for guests’ phone numbers might be a useful policy. I really didn’t get the impression that they will think about how they can avoid making the same mistake in future so as not to inconvenience other guests in they way we were.
