Top Local Tips for Florence

Add purpose to your stroll So often we explore without a destination, or purpose. I would suggest that no visit to Florence is complete without a visits to the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Florence, known worldwide as "The Duomo." It is a grand cathedral and is universally recognized. Sadly, what is missing from it are sculptures of the Twelve Apostles -- a commission undertaken by Michaelangelo in 1503, but only one, St. Matthew was started and it remains unfinished -- alas, it is not even located in The Duomo. From there I recommend visiting my favorite place of prayer, "Chiesa Santissimi Apostoli" on the tiny square of "Piazza Limbo." The square was once the cemetery where unbaptized children were buried. It is believed that it was founded by Charlemange around 800 A.D. The present church dates from 1075 and is a marvelously unspoiled and remains a parish church. It has a number of precious works within, but none more impressive that the large terra-cotta tabernacle by Andrea Della Robbia. If you are judicious you can plan your arrival around the celebration of a Mass and hear Gregorian chants as they were meant to be rendered. Afterwards head over the Arno at the Ponte Vecchio and turn right into Borgo San Jacopo and head for Mamma Gina's, the truest, typically Tuscan trattoria. The restaurant was established in the early Fifties when Signora Gina started cooking meals for the workmen dredging sand from the Arno for use in the many building sites involved in repairing the damage caused by the bombings of World War II. Located in a 15th century building with vaulted ceilings and is rustically, but tastefully furnished. I understand it is now run by Marino Cinali, still Mamma Gina still offers traditional-style cooking based on genuine, simple, delicious dishes of times past. As with most places the prices have crept up with Italy's adoption of the euro, but Eggplant Parmesan is to die for!

Il Latina does take reservations Il Latina is a must try dining experience. The food is excellent, a good value and the whole experience is a hoot. The guides say that you line up at 730 and 9 pm for a table. However, if the concierge calls and makes a reservation and you line up early, you get in first and your seating is better. Do not come late, reservations only mean you are seated first, not that they hold a table.

Very busy place We visited in late November and found Florence still very busy. There are no really large squares where tourists congregate and the streets and pavements are qutie narrow so you often have to push through people. Must be unbearable in Summer. Unless you are into visiting musemums and galleries a complete day for Florence is enough to see the important things.
