Protecting your belongings I went to Florence for a conference, stayed for a week. Overall my experience in Florence was extremely positive. This tip is about protecting the safety of your belongings. There are an amazing array of beautiful and historic buildings and sites in Florence, as well as a large number of museums, restaurants, shops, bars, etc. So in all of these places, your attention is likely to be on other things. Here's my advice to avoid pickpockets/snatchers: dress locally or like a student if you're younger. Carrying a secured backpack is safer than carrying a purse. Don't dress like a dumb tourist, you make yourself a bigger mark. Do keep your passport in a safe location, hard to get into and out of. Keep your money safe and don't show off so easily where your money is stored on your person. Always look confident when you're going somewhere. If you're fumbling around with a map, you're an easy target. The train station is where extra vigilance is needed.

Take a few days With all there is to see you will need a good few days. It's an incredible city.

Huge queues In my opinion, Florence isn't worth it, unless you're really into art and architecture. You'd have a more enjoyable day or two down the road in Pisa!
