Top Local Tips for Florence
Be aware!! We had booked into this hotel via booking.com for 1 night only and arrived at around 6pm. The young gentleman behind the reception was very pleasant and the room itself was basic but clean. Alas, that is where our nice experience ended. The crucial bit of information about this hotel is that not all the rooms are air conditioned! Our room was extremely hot, so we decided to switch on the fan and go out for a meal and a walk to let it cool down. When we got back, at about 11pm, all that happened was the hot air was circulated around the room, like a fan assisted oven and we could not stay in there. We were told by the nice young man that there was one air conditioned room available at a higher price (which we asked to take) but on speaking to the owner we were told that we would have to pay for both rooms! When the owner came to the hotel we had offered to take the more expensive room and even pay a cleaning surcharge for my use of the shower. However, the owner continued to insist that we pay for both or take showers to keep cool!! Of course we refused to pay and luckily found another hotel at 11.45pm, but I stated that my wife would move to the new hotel and I would wait behind for the police - This was my suggestion to ensure that we were not going to be accused of absconding from the hotel without paying! - After the owner had called the police, he said that they would not arrive and just wanted us out of his hotel. At this time I am being told by the booking agency that the hotel is now going to charge me for the room. Looks like this one did not end there on the night. My advice - Don't stay here!!

I attended the Major on a Collage work based activity trip so therefore we weren't there for a great deal of time and didn't have money to splash out on nice hotels.
The rooms were extremely old, they had no air conditioning and only big windows that could be opened. The room was right on the mainroad so this meant hearing the traffic stopping at three and starting at 6!! The rooms were of adequate size and were clean. The bathroom however was a cramped little concrete room which had a distinct smell of sewage, and no toilet seat. Also the Bday was so close to the toilet you couldn't sit on it normally!! The water ran at different temperatures according to how many people were having showers at the same time as you on the same floor! Also there was no cold tap so washing your teeth with warm water was a must!
The breakfast we had there was absolutely minimal. Literally, stale bread rolls with a choice of lard or rank old preserves to spread on them with your choice of coffe tea or hot chocolate! Oh, there was milk and chewy cereal however the hotel were in no position of bowls so if you wanted some, you had to sacrifice your drink cup and have it in there! We only ate at the hotel for one evening and it was standard.
The hotel position was ok. It was on the same road as various bars. Including a nice one called "James Pub" if your out there. It wasnt too close to central Florence if your looking for peace and quite and not a too long walk if your not. However in the summer heat its quite a treck!
I recommend taking maps with you as every street seems the same and finding your way back isn't the easiest of tasks.
In all the Major is an ok hotel to stay in if, like us your not there for very long and wont take leasuire time there. Also if your just looking for a place to stay whilst you make the most of the wonderful city, it's not too bad.
The central part itself caters for all tastes as the more central you get the more clubs/bars etc you will find. I recommend Faces, The Fish Bar, Astor Cafe. Monday night is ladies night so entry and drinks are free! (for ladies :P)
Hope this review as been some help.
