Top Local Tips for Florence
Day Trip to Montefioralle & Vignamaggio Hire a scooter (or a car) & travel south from Florence down the SS222. Turn off the main road to the right just before Greve in Chianti & go up the hill to visit Montefioralle, a beautifully preserved ancient walled village on top of the hill. Get there in time to have lunch there. Go back down to the main road, continue south & turn off to the left this time towards Localita Petriolo. This road loops into the hills with lots of villas. Follow for about 2 km. Visit the Villa Vignamaggio, a pink Renaissance villa where they filmed 'Much Ado About Nothing'. It's a vineyard & agritourism resort. There are some nice towns further on, but after those it's best to come back the same way unless they've fixed the road, as we continued on & it was unmade (a real adventure on a scooter!). It's 32kms back to Florence & this trip is probably about the furthest we would want to go on a scooter.
Just some tidbits... Restaurants, gelato, etc I studied in Florence for a summer in college, then recently went back with my husband. I was already in love with florence, but he is a history buff so i expected him to enjoy rome and paris much more- but i was wrong! Florence was by far his favorite place we went! Enjoy the Italian culture- Florence is not a "rome" where there are tons of famous sites you have to see, its nice just to relax, shop around the markets, eat and people watch in the lovely piazzas, walk along the river. I must recommend to walk up (or take the bus if you'd rather) to Piazza Michelangelo- the most AMAZING view of all of florence! Most of florence's central area is pedestrian only streets, which is so nice- you're not having to worry about getting run over by all the crazy drivers like we were in the bigger cities. I must also recommend to get gelato at Vivoli on via isola de stinche. its the oldest and BEST gelato in florence. We also loved the chefs ravioli at the restaurant 2 doors down from the hotel.
Reserve Museum slots for you and your group The Uffizi Museum and the Accademia Gallery ("Michealangelo museum") have contimuous lines with waits up to 2 or 3 hours, but can be booked prior, with the wait then down to minutes. For the Uffizi, show up early one day (8:15 opening) and book the next day. For the Accademia, call the reservation number and get a time slot and reservation number. The reservation number is 055 294883, there is a English language prompt on the first voice menu!!
