Top Local Tips for Florence
Out Experience in Florence May 1st, Labor Day in Italy. Unforuatenly, we were in Italy during a national holiday. Since May 1st is considered Italy's Labor Day all of the museums were closed. We were HIGHLY disappointed in this because we had hoped to go to the Academia to see David, but unfortunately was not able to do this. We did however have a great tour of the city. Florence is GORGEOUS and probably one of my favorite cities. We had a great walking tour that lasted about an hour and a half. We saw Piazza SAnta Croce, Piazza Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio and the Piazza Del Duomo. Duomo is an amazing Cathedral. It was probably one of the biggest Cathedrals I've ever seen in my entire life! From there we had time on our own. Todd and I decided to hike about 4 miles to the Piazza Michangelo, which was AWESOME! It had the most amazing view of the entire city. There were many shops and luckily a place to get a drink after an uphill walk! But the view was so worth the walk!! You have to go here if you ever go to Florence. We traveled back down, did a little bit of shopping, Florence is famous for very expensive Leather and hung out a little bit inside of a market that was going on. We had lunch from a street vendor and then toured the Santa Croce Church where the tomb of Michelangelo, Machiavelli and Rossini. What an amazing experience!! We then met back up with our group and back to the hotel for an included dinner. The included dinners are not the greatest, but they were ok. This dinner was very limited, but heck it saved us probably 50-70 euros, which was fine with us!
Don't miss this one Take a trip up to the Piazza Michaelangelo for the best view of Florence.
Walking in Florence If you're going to see many of the sights in Florence you'll probably be walking a lot. Wear comfortable shoes, as most areas are cobblestone (no high heals). The sidewalks are pretty narrow due to it being an older city. The streets run at many different angles, almost like spokes on a wheel, so be sure you either have very good directions or take a GPS device like a Garmin or Tom Tom with Europe loaded. We got lost one night and the Garmin was the only thing that saved us!
