eating in Florence Make sure you get recommendations on restauraunts before you sit down for a meal. The maitre d's are very charming in getting you to come into the restauraunt, but the quality of the food is very ofen mediocre, to say the least. My family and I had a most excellent dinner at Mama Gina's near the Ponte Vecchio - staff were wonderful, and the food was great. But we also had some not so good food at other places. Steer away from the more crowded locations, especially during lunch time.

Getting around Florence Everywhere within the City is easily, and best, reached by foot because it allows you to soak up the atmosphere and appreciate what a beautiful place Florence is. Buses run regularly, until really late, and circumnavigate the City so, if you get on at the wrong stop you'll end up going around Florence and ending up back at the bus station at Santa Nouvella! Buy a ticket (approx 4.50 euros) and make sure you get it stamped (do this at the machine on the bus, as the bus departs) - if you're caught without having done this you run the risk of an immediate fine! Tickets can be purchased at Tourist Information offices or at some newspaper kiosks. Beware zebra crossings - they seem to mean that traffic has the right of way as no-one seems to stop and let you cross - and mopeds, which are everywhere and dart precariously in and out of pedestrian walkways!

Busses and trains We used the local buses while in Florence or walked. They have very small buses to get around the small streets (like bus A, D etc). You can buy tickets at the Tobacco stores for about 1 euro each, they are good for 75 minutes after you activate them in the bus, so you can take several buses for one ticket. We also took the train from Rome to Florence (Euro Star) and it was very clean and very fast. Much better than taking taxis or driving.
