Great location, nice hotel

from tmp24
I had a lovely stay at this hotel. My room was very attractive and the location couldn't be better. It's close to the Accademia and a wonderful foccaceria too! I had no problems.

Pleasant stay

from SueVT
We stayed here in early August 2004. The location was excellent, within walking distance of the Duomo, San Lorenzo Market, Accademia, but away from the hordes of tourists. The staff was pleasant, not as helpful as in other hotels, but not rude either. The room was fine, somewhat spartan but clean and adequate; the dining space was particularly nice as were the lounges on the first floor. Only caution -- upon arrival we received a coupon for a free drink, which we used. When we checked out, our bill included a charge for the drinks. We protested, and the bill was readjusted.

Great stay in Sept.

We stayed one night in Sept. and had a lovely stay. The room was fairly large and we had a nice balcony overlooking the terrace. Fabulous place to enjoy some wine and cheese. Large bathroom and nice access to Accademia and other locations.

Orto De Medici is a Great Value!

from Moose44
My wife and I arrived on May 9th for a five night stay. The hotel is a terrific choice given that it has a three star designation but has the feel of a higher ranked hotel. The location is excellent as it is an easy ten minute walk directly to San Lorenzo market and from there a few minutes to the Duomo and the Piazza della Signoria. The staff are courteous and knowledgeable about the city and will flawlessly advise on dinner reservations (try the Academia in Piazza San Marco for outstanding food and service at reasonable prices). For this price range the rooms are spacious and very clean and comfortable. We were very impressed with this hotel and enjoyed the fact that it is in a quiet part of Florence... we would definitely go back!

Nice location!

The Orto de Medici was an excellent pick for a stay in Florence. It is very close to the train station and only a few blocks walking distance to all the major sites/attractions and restaurants. The staff was very friendly and helpful and there is a Mail Boxes etc right next door if you are interested in shipping home all your purchases like we did!! The rooms were clean but a downfall was the bathroom which was clean but, like I read in another review, only had a handheld spray unit in a tub rather than an actual shower. Another small quirk was that the pillows were really HARD!!! but overall, it was an excellent stay in an excellent location. I would definitely stay there again.

Home away from home

I have stayed at the Orto twice in the past two years, most recently two weeks ago. I have found the staff to be delightful and very helpful whether it be suggesting a restaurant, tour or simply making reservations. The hotel is always clean and the rooms very European...usually a smaller, tighter bathroom, but plenty of space to relax in, keeping in mind that one travels to such a place to see the sights, not stay in a hotel all day. Breakfast is typical Italian and one can eat more than enough to get through lunch. Location is great, 4 blocks from San Lorenzo and six from the Duomo making you feel like you aren't trapped in a tourist center and living more like a typical Florentine. Also, right across the street is my favorite restaurant (da Mimmo) and next door is a Mail Boxes Etc. where Orto guests get 10% off all shipping which is nice as there is much to buy and sent home. The only way I would not recommend the Orto is if you have a child that needs a stroller and that is not because of the hotel, but because of the walk to tourist areas on cobblestone streets.

Very bad experience

The exact same thing happened to me as it did the the Washington, DC person. Upon arriving, I was told that the room had air conditioning problems and they were sending us to another Ni Hotel that was of the same quaility. However, we were there in March and they don't even have air conditioning at this time of the year. I had the same thought.....they gave my room to a higher paying customer. I had also reconfirmed my room. The hotel they sent us to was not of very good quality. I was furious after all the time I spent on the Internet reading reviews and selecting a place I thought I would like to stay.
It ruined my trip and we left Florence ahead of schedule. Don't make reservations at this hotel! You may never actually stay there!!!

Disappointed in the Orto de Medici

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Orto de Medici is very tired and could use a major facelift. We stayed in a quad room (which we found were hard to come by). The room was very large and clean, but was decorated very spartenly. The bathroom was clean, but old and substandard. There was only a soaking tub and no shower--other than a hand held unit which you had to use sitting down! This hotel compared very unfavorably with a 3 star hotel in which my family and I stayed in Venice, which was much nicer.

Nice Hotel, Quiet Location, Great Neighborhood

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed here March 22-26 2004. Convienient to Santa Maria Novella station via a 4-6 EUR cab ride. Staff helpful and friendly -- and always someone at the front desk. I had a double room of good size. The bed looks big, but as with most double rooms in Italy, it's really just two twin beds shoved together covered by one large bedspread. This hotel was remodeled 2 years ago, so the bathrooms are modern -- but the room retains an old style charm. Breakfast is decent, mortadella, salami, bread, croissants, fruit, cereal, etc. They make a nice cappucino as well. There are several small restaurants in the neighborhood, as well as a self-serve launderette, if needed. The hotel is on Via San Gallo, and if you walk straight down the streets, you will arrive at the Duomo in around 15-20 minutes. Quiet area at night, great for sleep. Would stay here again.

A bad experience

We just returned from Florence where we had reservations with the Orto de Medici for the nights of March 23 and 24, 2004. Although we had made our reservations through Expedia, I had reconfirmed the reservation directly with the hotel and received an email back stating that the hotel did indeed have our reservations and looked forward to our arrival. After a long drive from Milan in pouring rain and a very hard drive into Florence, we finally arrived at the hotel around 4 p.m. As we began to unload the car in the pouring rain, a hotel staff member came out and basically told us not to bother as they did not have a room for us. There had been a "computer mixup". They had arranged a room for us at a hotel a few blocks away. All we were given was a map and a goodbye, in pouring rain, in downtown Florence. I do not believe there was a "computer mixup" as the hotel had directly confirmed with me. I personally believe that our room was given to a customer who was charged a higher rate than that we had received through Expedia.Be very careful of the validity of reservations and confirmations from this hotel.

Top Local Tips for Florence

Duomo Be sure to climb the stairway into the dome (if you are in good shape and not claustrophobic). The experience is otherworldly and the sites are stupendous!

Restaurant The Accademia Restaurant in Florence is delicious!

Airport transfers A taxi from Pisa airport cost us a fortune as it is about an hours journey by car. Make sure you check out public transport before you travel as this is a lot less expensive
