Top Local Tips for Florence

Getting around Pick up a small map from your hotel. Learn to read street signs. Wear comfortable, durable shoes. Lots of walking in central Florence. (I think that's why one doesn't see many fat Italians.)

restaurants we enjoyed, in order of preference Paoli, Cafe Fiorenza Gelateria (best we had in Italy), Trattoria il Caminetto, Gilli, Fiorini di Oro (pizza), Ristorante Accademia

cappuccino on the run One of the best pieces of advice we received before we went to Itlay was the cost difference between having a Cappuccino (or anything really) at the stand up bar versus the outside table. Italians have a wonderful habit of taking 5 minutes to walk in to a cafe or patisserie and ordering a beverage to have at the bar or banco. The staff try to get you to sit but there were places where a cafe latte was 1.50 euros at the bar and 4 euros at a table outside. Hold your ground and tell them you'll be standing at the bar thank you.
