The Uffizi A superb art gallery but get there by 8.15 am to get in first thing - unless that is you enjoy standing in a line for 2 hours!

Things to do on a rainy day Go shopping at 'I Gigli', the main shopping mall for Florence. It's situated about 20 minute drive out of Florence at the junctions of the motorways. 120 shops and restaurants and open till 10pm. It's full of shops and department stores for Italians, so don't expect Gucci and Armani shops.

Florence Train Station We read a lot about using the metro in Italy before we departed for our trip and most of the information we got said that it was really dodgy and unsafe. We found this to be correct for the most part BUT would not want to put anyone off traveling in Italy because of this! We found that you just needed to have your wits about you. I wore a money belt UNDER my clothes and made sure no-one saw me taking money out of it. My husband also had money on him, he bought the tickets with this money and I stayed with our luggage, all padlocked of course. The biggest problem we had was people trying to distract us so that the other person they were with could pick pocket, however, we had been warned of this and SPOKE TO NO-ONE! So in a nutshell, use the public transport but be sensible!!
