Excellent hotel in an excellent location

We spent six night at the Hotel Grand Minerva in December 2004, and were delighted by this wonderful hotel. The staff was friendly and helpful, the room was large and comfortable, and the breakfast buffet was fantastic! The rooftop pool was closed, but I imagine it would be quite lovely in the summertime. There was an internet-connected PC near the stairway for guests to use free of charge (but if you're an internet junkie, I'd recommend finding any nearby Internet Train location and paying to use their PCs - much faster!). I didn't really notice much in the way of vagrants/crowds in the piazza - perhaps because it was December, or perhaps because I am accustomed to San Francisco.

The hotel is within easy walking distance of the train station, which is especially useful since there's a cheap shuttle bus that runs from the airport to the train station (2 euros, I think). You can walk to all the major museums and churches in central Florence quite easily, and there are many restaurants around (we enjoyed the fixed price menu at Il Grillo, directly across the piazza from the hotel). The gelato shop on the corner is also a treat (yes, even in December!).

Both my husband and I have travelled extensively, both within North America and internationally, and we were both very satisfied with this hotel. If we ever make it back to Florence, we will definitely stay here again.

Was almost okay

It's perfectly located, just in front of the piazza di S.M.N., very close to the S.M.N. train station and still it's very quiet!
We reserved a double room with EUR130,- per night, which faces to nothing but walls. Since the piazza was quiet even during the nights, we wish we could have a room facing the piazza, considering the rate.
But the staff were all friendly, the room itself was cozy. We took some pictures at the pool on the top floor of the hotel with S.M.N. church and the famous Duomo on the back. Breakfast restaurant was also with great view of courtyard and variety of food, I have stayed typical Italian 4-star-rated hotels but this was the best.
Again the only reason for my rating is the room location for the rate.

The Minerva - Magnificent

This is a top notch hotel with some very, very nice touches. The breakfast is absolutely awesome with home made cakes, pastries (still warm) and cooked apples/bananas...? Weird and wonderful I had a great stay and will be back. It is a little expensive but if you book direct you get the best deal - online at grandhotelminerva - incidentally the pub opposite (the fiddler's elbow is great craic)

Very nice hotel

My husband and I stayed in Grand Hotel Minerva for 2 nights (Nov. 22-24) and we really enjoyed it. Nice hotel, very well-trained staff, good restaurant. Great location - just 5 min. walk from the train station, short walking distance to all the main attractions in the city. I highly recommend this hotel.

Beautiful hotel in a beautiful city

I stayed here two nights on a recent trip to Italy. By far, this was the best hotel of the trip. The room was spacious, clean, and updated. The bathroom was nice also. There was a little smell coming up from the drain in the sink. But once you closed the drain, it was undetectable. Our room had a terrace to look out at the piazza. Within a few feet of the hotel there was a great place to get some gelatto, a wonderful bakery, and a beautiful church. I feel the hotel was centrally located enough that you could get to most points of interest with a little walking. Who would not want to walk those beautiful streets?

Charming Hotel- Loved it !!

In our two week trip to Italy we stayed at several hotels some of them 5 star and other 4 star like the GHM. We must say that we were highly impressed by the GHM for it's ambiance, modern decoration, friendly staff and location. The hotel is nicely decorated, modern and fashionably designed... very nice after a week and a half of staying in "old style" decorated rooms.
Breakfast was wonderful and the concierge exteremly helpful and friendly!!!

The only step back would be the image that the plaza gives when arriving to the hotel as it is full of immigrants drinking which does not create a great impression.
After walking the plaza several times it does not create any harm but the aspect is not very breathtaking.

Lovely hotel. Clean, clean room, spacious and full bath with shower. Breakfast with many selections, staff most helpful. Within a block of the train station and several hostels across the piazza. This made for rather large gatherings at night right in front of the hotel with drinking, a few fights and loud music. Our room was not affected but other family disturbed by noise. Would not go out at night without my husband. Close to shopping and the Academy.

perfect for what we wanted

We stayed at the Minerva from October 6,2004 to October 13th and we found the Minerva perfect for what we needed. It was 2-4 blocks from great shopping. 2 blocks from the San Lorenzo shopping plaza. Several blocks from the Arno. It had all night internet usage for my husband. The front desk was great at booking tours and private guides for us. The rooftop pool was too cold to swim in, and our 8 year old son was disappointed but a lovely spot to rest and get away from the hustle and bustle. The only thing that bothered us was the seediness of the Plaza Santa Maria Novella. We have heard they are raising money to fix it up but it is not pretty to look at. Lots of people milling around and lots of pigeons. I would have preferred to open my windows to a different view. We had my 83 year old mother with us and the elevator came in handy. Taxi's arrived within 2-3 minutes when the front desk called for them. The breakfast in the morning was fine for what we needed to get going.

My husband and I felt extremely uncomfortable entering and leaving the hotel due to the fact that there are some sleazy looking people hanging around the piazza most of the time. Sunday seems to be the worst, with garbage strewn all over. It's unfortunate because the hotel itself was nice..but I wouldn't go back until they clean up the area.

We had a fabulous long weekend break at the Minerva. Location is excellent with all of the main attractions within easy walking distance.
Although we had a room overlooking the piazza we did not have to endure any problems with noise. The room was impressive - large, well furnished and spotlessly clean. The staff were friendly and efficient. The breakfast was very good with plenty of choice.
Perhaps not the cheapest of options but certainly well worth the money!

Top Local Tips for Florence

Crowds If you don't like crowds and queues, it might be best to plan your visit around the peak tourist times. Visiting the famous art attractions was quite time consuming in the queues and inside there were crowds to contend with, making ti difficult to spend any time appreciating the work fo art.

Watch your belongings! My wallet was stolen from my backpack style purse. Don't carry a wallet, and guard your posessions better than I did.

Eating out Italian style Take special time to vist the many restaurants which are very reasonable and full of atmosphere especially Tutti's not five minutes walk from the minerva hotel. The waitors are nothing short of italian actors and you become part of the show plus of course superb food. Even the italians visit Tutti's
