Historical Traveller Reviews of Grand Hotel

d expect!

from PhillyBoyz
What's left to be said? This is one of the old, grand damme hotels of Florence, sits right on the Arno, and offers much of the high-end, old world experience one wants when doing Florence.

We sued Starwood points to stay for free (using the deluxe room option)and were pleased to see that that's what we actually got: a big, beautiful corner room, with balcanoy doors overlooking the Oggnizanti piazza and the Arno. Honestly, how can you go wrong with that?

The staff were friendly and attentive and most of the conceirges bent over backwards to help out, incl getting us last minute tickets to the Academie and Ufizzi (who knew there'd be long lines even in March!!??)

Only downside of this place? The food and beverage costs: we had two drinks in their bar before heading off to dinner and it totaled $26...the first and last time we did that.

Oh, and if you're an SPG member and the Grand is sold out, the Westin Excelsior is 100' feet across the piazza and looks just as grand.

The Grand is definitely a great way to stay in Florence!

Grand Hotel Florence -- the perfect place to stay in Florence

from jimlerbs
We just returned from a long weekend at The Grand in Florence. We sandwiched a weekend in Florence around a week in Rome where we stayed at their sister hotel, The Westin Excelsior Rome. The Grand is part of the Westin's Luxury Collection of hotels. A beautiful old hotel in the grand hotel tradition. Extremely well maintained. Rooms are large, spacious, well furnished. Bedding and bath are to die for. Our room (#214) looked out on The Arno and had two balconies -- one in the bedroom and one in the bathroom.

This was our second time back to The Grand, and we intend to return again.

Staff and service is excellent. Food and service in their new bar/restaurant in the front lobby were also excellent, but the restaurant is a bit too modern for the rest of the hotel. Breakfast, which was included with our package, was good but not as good as The Excelsior in Rome.

We stayed at The Grand as part of the Westin's Luxury Collection's Welcome to Italy program -- you must stayed at least seven nights in total in any of their Luxury Collection hotels in Italy. The hotels came at an all inclusive rate of $489 per night. At first this may seem high, but when you consider the price is in dollars (not euros) and includes all taxes, service charges and breakfast, it is actually very reasonable for the level of service and quality of the hotels you are staying at. This was our second time in two years that we utilized the Welcome to Italy plan. In addition to The Grand we stayed at the Excelsior in Rome, this time, and previously at The St. Regis Grand in Rome and The Regina-Europa in Venice.

Location is everything, and you won't find a better spot in Florence to stay. Right on the River Arno, and easy walking to all sights and restaurants.

Be sure to dine at Trattoria Pandemonio, just across the river on Via del Leone. We have dined there three times now (twice this trip), and will plan future trips to Italy to include a stop in Florence and diner with "Mamma" at Pandemonio.

If you are going to Florence, The Grand is the place to stay.

Brilliant but expensive!

from Amospring
This hotel is excellent! The rooms are very well decorated (but see pictures to see if it will suit your taste). The concierge desk is efficient and helpful. Everyone smiles in the hotel. We didn't really eat in the hotel as it is quite expensive - simple breakfast is 32 euro's and a shot of bacardi at the bar is 13 euro's! Coke is extra! However, having said that, you are surrounded by absolute luxury. Try and get a room with a river view as that is best. You can also use the facilities at the Westin across the courtyard which is a sister hotel - they have a pleasant bar. The location is great, next to the river Arno and the main tourist attractions are all walking distance.

The Grand is Grand

Enjoyed the Grand Hotel in Florence recently. Wonderful hotel that is small but not too small. Wonderful service, great location, in a charming atmosphere. You can't go wrong at this hotel. Happy travels.

Outstanding Room

This was the second Starwood hotel this trip that we used Starpoints for. We stayed five nights and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We had a marvelous upgraded huge room that, although rather baroque in decor, was very comfortable. We had a view of the Arno. The room was very quiet. There was a large walk in closet and exceedingly well-appointed bathroom. Everything was sumptuous.

The concierge was extremely helpful and useful for recommending restaurants. And one of the porters saved us quite a bit of money by pointing out that the car we rented had more damage than was accurately shown on the rental form, which we subsequently had adjusted.

The negatives were minor and did not mar the experience. First, the location was not as central as I would have liked. Second, the public areas of the hotel are rather uninspired. This latter point did not really affect us, but it is nice to enter a place that has some life to it.

In any case. this was a great place to stay.

This was our 2nd visit to the Grand Hotel and it was fantastic once again. The staff are brilliant. We were travelling with kids so we had interconnecting rooms. So much space and beautifully furnished. The restaurant food is excellent quality and great choices and there is also a special menu for kids. This is how a hotel should be run!We would definately stay there again.

Hard to find any complaints about this hotel. Staff were extremely helpful. Hotel was beautiful and in a great location. Amazing view from the balcony of the Arno. Rooms were exceptional. All-around great hotel

Fantastic Hotel!

Stayed here for 4 nights, and I loved this hotel! Definitely one of the best Starwood properties I've every stayed at. I would highly recommend it.

The room was beautiful - very large, nicely decorated, VERY comfortable beds, and a wonderful marble bathroom. The location was excellent: 5 minutes to the Ponte Vecchio, 10 minutes to the Uffizi, 15 to the Duomo and about 20 to the Galleria dell' Accademia. Beautiful views of the Arno River.

The service was outstanding - I twisted my knee the day before I arrived in Florence. 2 nights I had to order a bag of ice to ice down my knee. They delivered it to my room, and I was never charged for it. The staff was very nice, accomodating and friendly.

Recommendations: *Il Profeta trattoria about three blocks from the hotel. It was so good, we ate dinner there twice. If they have it, try the wild boar with white beans in olive oil. One of the best meals on my 2 1/2 week trip. We loved our waiter - Ernesto! Ask the conceierge for directions to the restaurant.
*Rivoire Cafe - at the Piazza della Signoria (near the Uffizi) - it's rather expensive, but a great people watching place, and wonderful for a cappucino and brioche for breakfast.
*Definitely go see the Ufizzi and the Galleria dell' Accademia. But don't wait in the long lines! Go on-line to, and reserve your tickets in advance. At the Ufizzi, the reservation line is at Door #3, which is on the right hand side (not clearly marked). And at the Accademia, go to the front of the line and let the person who works there know that you have reservations (show him or her your paper with your confirmation number on it), and they'll direct you inside. We were SO glad that we made these reservations in advance. No one likes waiting in long lines!

Highly recommended.
