Top Local Tips for Florence
concerts check churches etc for concerts. When we were there there was an annual music festival on and it was either cheap or free and brilliant. We have done this in other cities and discovered great culture that wasn't widely publicised.
College town We didn't know this, but we were told about 7,000 overseas college kids decend upon Florence every semester so Florence seemed much more Americanized than other places we visited in Italy. You'll hear MANY more people speaking English, and the skinny teen-agers will make you feel very old even if you're only 39! As we walked around, it was pretty obvious there were many bars catering to the far-away-from-home college crowd with bars called "Home Away From Home," etc. If I had been 20 again, I would have LOVED it.
