Top Local Tips for Florence

train stuff Don't be scared to use the rail as much as possible! It's not only cheap but very reliable (puts British Rail to shame). Most folk generally need to travel to Florence via Bologna or Pisa but some prefer to use preplanned buses from airports. Save hassle and don't bother. If I had enough holiday left I would have probably travelled from Florence by rail to Rome and/or Milan also but there's always next time! One note of caution: Book trains in advance where possible - they tend to get busy!

Fiesole If staying in Florence, catch a Number 7 bus to Fiesole where there are amazingly beautiful views, good restaurants, some Roman ruins (though not as impressive as some in other parts of Italy), and a pleasant atmosphere. The views from the bus are fabulous as you start to wind up the hill and go past San Domenico (where there's a monastry, good pizzeria and an EC research university). Just be very careful to keep an eye out for thieves and make sure that nobody picks your pocket on the crowded bus.

Eat carefully! Our first three days in Florence, we didn't have a single good meal! If this happens to you - immediately get recommendations! Once we bought a more current travel guide and spoke with our hotel, every meal was fantastic. And always check prices before sitting down - they vary tremendously throughout Florence, from a four-course dinner with wine for two at E40, to a bowl of soup in a cafe that cost $20!
